Gaya Municipal Corporation Greenlights Ambitious Rs 572 Crore Budget for 2026-27

The standing committee of the Gaya Municipal Corporation has officially approved a comprehensive budget of approximately Rs 572 crore for the upcoming financial year 2026-27. This significant financial plan, which received approval during a meeting held on Friday, is now set to be presented before the municipal board for final authorization and implementation.

Vision for a Smart and Modern Gaya

Mayor Virendra Kumar, also known as Ganesh Paswan, who presided over the crucial meeting, emphasized that the budget was meticulously prepared on the foundational principle of 'no profit, no loss'. He articulated the primary objective, stating, "Our main goal is to develop Gaya Ji, which is recognized as Bihar's religious capital, into a smart city. We are committed to transforming the city's image to meet international standards, enhancing its global appeal and livability."

Comprehensive Focus on Infrastructure and Civic Amenities

The proposed budget allocates substantial resources across multiple critical sectors to ensure holistic urban development. Key priorities include:

  • Infrastructure Development: Construction and upgrading of major and minor roads, along with efficient drainage systems in all municipal wards.
  • Sanitation and Environment: Implementation of solid waste management initiatives, establishment of a solid waste treatment plant specifically for construction and demolition waste, and the installation of smog towers to combat air pollution.
  • Urban Beautification: Beautification of important city intersections, development of decorative water fountains at various public squares, and extensive plantation drives to create and expand green areas.
  • Essential Services: Strengthening of the water supply system to ensure reliable access and the installation of streetlights and high-mast lights to improve public safety and visibility.

Social Welfare and Skill Development Initiatives

Standing committee member and former deputy mayor, Akhouri Onkarnath alias Mohan Shrivastava, highlighted the budget's strong emphasis on social welfare and economic empowerment. He detailed, "Under the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM), we will provide skill training in various trades such as computer operations, stitching, and beauty parlour management. This initiative aims to empower thousands of men and women by making them self-dependent through the creation of sustainable employment opportunities."

Additionally, the budget includes provisions for:

  1. Establishing old-age homes to support the elderly population.
  2. Setting up health centres to improve medical accessibility.
  3. Constructing community halls in all wards to foster social cohesion.
  4. Developing new homes under housing schemes to address urban housing needs.

Alignment with National Guidelines and Missions

The budget strategically aligns with several national guidelines and missions to maximize impact and ensure compliance. Significant expenditures are earmarked in accordance with the recommendations of the 15th and 16th Finance Commissions. Funds will be directed towards:

  • Solid waste management projects to enhance urban cleanliness.
  • The Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Mission, focusing on water conservation and afforestation.
  • Subjects enumerated under the 12th Schedule of the Constitution, which pertains to municipal responsibilities including urban planning, regulation of land use, and public health.

This comprehensive budgetary approach underscores the Gaya Municipal Corporation's commitment to not only addressing immediate civic needs but also laying a robust foundation for sustainable, long-term urban growth and development, positioning Gaya as a model city in Bihar.
