Ashok Gehlot Firmly Rejects BJP's Retirement Suggestion, Pledges Century of Service
In a sharp political rebuttal, former Rajasthan Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot on Friday dismissed BJP state president Madan Rathore's suggestion that he should retire to a "sanyas ashram" after turning 75. Gehlot, who will celebrate his 75th birthday in May, asserted with conviction that he intends to remain actively engaged in public service until the remarkable age of 100.
Age Cannot Dictate Political Relevance, Says Gehlot
Gehlot categorically rejected the notion that age should be a criterion for political relevance or activity. He framed his response by referencing historical and contemporary figures, stating, "I have already clarified that such a retirement rule should apply to Prime Minister Narendra Modiji or RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat ji if it is to be enforced. Mahatma Gandhi himself aspired to serve the nation for 125 years, but his life was tragically cut short by extremists. Similarly, I have expressed my desire to serve the people of Rajasthan and India for 100 years. Therefore, this suggestion simply cannot apply to me."
Gehlot Questions BJP's Intent and Evasion of Issues
The veteran Congress leader did not stop at defending his position; he went on to question the underlying intent behind Rathore's remarks. Gehlot alleged that BJP leaders are deliberately avoiding substantive responses to the critical issues raised by the opposition. "How can they presume to dictate what Congress leaders should or should not do?" he asked pointedly. "Instead of addressing the legitimate concerns we have highlighted, they are offering evasive and deflective answers."
Gehlot specifically referred to what he termed "Intezaar Shastra" (the art of waiting or evasion), accusing the ruling party of consistently shifting the context of debates. "At the very least, they should provide clear answers—a simple 'yes' or 'no' to our questions. But altering the context to avoid direct responses is their standard tactic," he added, emphasizing his frustration with the BJP's approach to political discourse.
Political Reactions and Escalating Tensions in Rajasthan
Rathore's comments have ignited a fierce political reaction within the Congress party, further intensifying the ongoing war of words between the ruling BJP and the opposition in Rajasthan. This exchange underscores the deepening political rift in the state, with personal jabs and policy debates intertwining. The controversy highlights broader themes of ageism in politics, leadership longevity, and the strategies employed by both parties to gain rhetorical advantage.
As Rajasthan gears up for future electoral battles, such confrontations are likely to become more frequent and heated. Gehlot's unwavering stance signals his continued prominence in state and national politics, challenging any assumptions about his retirement. The BJP, on the other hand, faces mounting pressure to address opposition queries directly, as evasion tactics risk undermining public trust.
