Goa Assembly Debate Heats Up Over District Headquarters and Governor's Address

In a lively session at the Porvorim Assembly, MLAs engaged in a spirited debate on the motion of thanks to the governor's address. The discussion brought forward strong demands and pointed criticisms from both sides of the aisle.

Curchorem MLA Makes a Strong Case for District Headquarters

Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral took center stage with a compelling argument. He passionately advocated for declaring Curchorem as the headquarters of the newly notified Kushavati district. Cabral emphasized the town's strategic central location within the district, calling it the ideal choice for administrative functions.

Cabral did not stop there. He also put forward a visionary proposal for the government. The MLA suggested introducing a ferry service that would connect Khamamol in Curchorem to Panaji. He highlighted how this facility would slash travel time for daily commuters. More importantly, Cabral stated it would represent a significant leap forward in developing the state's waterways infrastructure.

Opposition MLAs Launch Sharp Critique of Governor's Address

The debate took a critical turn as opposition benches voiced their dissatisfaction. Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira led the charge, pointing out what he described as serious omissions in the governor's speech.

Ferreira raised a specific concern. He noted that the governor failed to address the 10-point charter of demands outlined by former High Court judge Justice Ferdino Rebello. According to Ferreira, this charter contained crucial recommendations for improving the state's governance framework.

Growing Concerns Over Law and Order in Goa

The Aldona MLA expressed deep worry about the deteriorating law and order situation in Goa. He criticized the governor's address for lacking concrete steps to tackle this pressing issue. Ferreira listed several problems that went unaddressed.

  • Illegal sand mining activities across the state
  • Conversion of ecologically sensitive salt pans
  • Persistent corruption within government offices

Ferreira stressed that these matters demand urgent attention from the government. He also touched upon the sensitive Mhadei water dispute. "The manner in which the Mhadei matter is being handled is very sad," Ferreira said. He added that the governor had not been able to address this complex issue effectively.

Several other MLAs joined the discussion, contributing to a comprehensive debate on the motion of thanks. The session highlighted both developmental aspirations and governance concerns facing the state.
