Goa Chief Electoral Officer Transfers Final Electoral Roll to State Election Commission

In a significant development for Goa's electoral process, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sanjay Goel announced on Saturday that his office has officially shared the final electoral roll with the State Election Commission. This move sets the stage for crucial decisions regarding upcoming local elections.

Decision on Electoral Roll Usage for CCP Elections

Sanjay Goel clarified that the State Election Commission holds the authority to determine which electoral roll will be utilized for the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) elections scheduled for next month. He emphasized his non-interference in municipal and panchayat election matters, stating, "I am nobody to comment on municipality and panchayat elections; this is the domain of the state election commissioner."

This statement came in response to inquiries about potential concerns that the CCP elections might proceed based on outdated electoral rolls. Questions were raised regarding how individuals whose names have been recently deleted from the rolls would be accommodated in the voting process.

Validity of Final Roll for Broader Elections

The CEO further explained that the finalized electoral roll carries substantial weight beyond local polls. It is deemed valid for upcoming assembly elections, parliamentary elections, and byelections across the state. This consolidation aims to streamline electoral preparations and ensure consistency in voter databases.

Highlighting immediate implications, Goel noted that the publication of the final roll paves the way for notifying the date for the Ponda constituency byelection. He stressed the urgency of preparations, as the six-month constitutional deadline to conduct the election from when the seat became vacant is rapidly approaching.

Electoral Changes in Ponda Constituency

The Ponda constituency has undergone notable revisions in its electoral roll following the Summary Revision (SIR). The final count shows 4,193 names deleted and 362 names added, resulting in a revised electorate of 27,927, down from the previous 31,758.

This byelection was necessitated by the unfortunate passing of agriculture minister and two-time former Chief Minister Ravi Naik in October. The veteran politician, who represented the Ponda constituency, died at the age of 79, creating the vacancy that now requires electoral resolution.

As the State Election Commission deliberates on the roll for CCP elections, all eyes remain on how these administrative steps will influence voter participation and electoral integrity in Goa's democratic exercises.
