Goa CM pledges land rights for tribals honoring Birsa Munda

In a significant move for tribal communities in Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant declared that granting ownership rights to tribals over lands they have cultivated for generations would serve as the most meaningful tribute to legendary tribal freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda. The announcement came during the 150th birth anniversary commemorations of the revered tribal leader.

Honoring Birsa Munda's Legacy Through Land Rights

Speaking at an event organized by the department of tribal welfare in Margao on Saturday, Chief Minister Sawant emphasized the historical significance of land rights for tribal communities. "Birsa Munda fought to protect the rights of tribals over jal, jamin, and jungle (water, land, and forests). The first right on the land in the forests belongs to the adivasis," Sawant stated, connecting contemporary policy with the freedom fighter's historical struggle.

The event witnessed the presence of several dignitaries including Minister for Tribal Welfare Ramesh Tawadkar, PWD Minister Digambar Kamat, and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Ganesh Gaonkar, underscoring the government's commitment to tribal welfare initiatives.

Substantial Progress in Land Rights Implementation

The Chief Minister provided concrete details about his government's achievements in securing tribal land rights. "My government has granted sanads to 5,000 applicants under the Forest Rights Act so far," Sawant revealed, highlighting the substantial progress made in formalizing tribal land ownership.

Looking ahead, the CM set an ambitious target for completing the remaining claims. "It would be my endeavor to clear the remaining 5,000 claims within the next year," he committed, demonstrating the administration's determination to address pending applications systematically.

Comprehensive Tribal Development Initiatives

Beyond land rights, the Goa government unveiled broader plans for tribal community development. Sawant announced the creation of a modern tribal village in Goa designed to serve dual purposes: providing forest-based self-employment opportunities for local tribal communities while offering visitors an immersive experience of authentic tribal culture.

The Chief Minister also highlighted existing infrastructure supporting tribal heritage, including the tribal research centre established at Sanguem, which aims to showcase tribal culture and history for the benefit of both tribal communities and the general public.

In another significant cultural preservation effort, Sawant announced that a tribal museum will soon open in Ponda, featuring portraits of tribal freedom fighters and comprehensive exhibits on tribal heritage, ensuring that the contributions and traditions of Goa's tribal communities receive proper recognition and preservation.

The day's commemorations began with bike rallies originating from all talukas across Goa, culminating at the SGPDA ground in Margao, symbolizing the widespread participation and significance of the Birsa Munda anniversary celebrations throughout the state.
