Goa Chief Minister Oversees Lairai Jatra Preparations at Shirgao Temple
In a proactive move to ensure the smooth conduct of the annual Lairai Jatra, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the revered goddess Lairai temple in Shirgao on Tuesday. During his visit, he meticulously reviewed the extensive arrangements put in place for the event and offered prayers, underscoring the administration's commitment to safety and order.
Comprehensive Action Plan for Incident-Free Celebrations
Chief Minister Sawant detailed a robust action plan that has been under development for the past two months, involving multiple government departments. "Our entire administration has prepared an action plan and a disaster management plan," he stated. "Various departments, from the collector to the police, health services, and the public works department, have been working tirelessly. Local MLA Premendra Shet has also been minutely monitoring the arrangements." He assured that the administration is determined to prevent any incidents, even minor ones, unlike last year, by implementing stringent measures across the temple precinct.
Call for Devotee Cooperation to Manage Crowds
With thousands of devotees expected to throng the Lairai Jatra from Goa and neighboring states like Maharashtra and Karnataka, Sawant emphasized the need for public cooperation. "Devotees should not create situations at any place where there is overcrowding," he urged. "They should, in turn, voluntarily act to dissipate crowds if they see such a situation occurring." This appeal aims to foster a collective effort in maintaining safety during the high-attendance event, particularly on the first night when rituals peak.
Rituals Commence as Dhonds Begin Fasting
Meanwhile, the dhonds, who observe fasting in the lead-up to the jatra, initiated their traditional rituals on Tuesday morning. The jatra attracts the largest number of devotees on the first night, when the dhonds, after taking a purifying dip in the temple pond, proceed to the homkhund to walk over live embers—a highlight of the spiritual gathering.
Prayers for Communal Harmony Amid Controversy
In light of recent controversies, including remarks by YouTuber Gautam Khattar against St Francis Xavier, Chief Minister Sawant used his temple visit to pray for communal harmony in Goa. "I have prayed that this year's jatra should proceed smoothly. I have also prayed that Goa's communal harmony be preserved," he said. He cautioned against inflammatory statements, noting, "Often, in the heat of the moment, various people make various statements. But it should be seen that no one says anything that hurts sentiments." This reflects his focus on maintaining peace and unity during the festive period.
The administration's thorough preparations, combined with calls for devotee responsibility and prayers for social cohesion, highlight a multifaceted approach to ensuring a safe and harmonious Lairai Jatra in Goa.
