In a significant push to accelerate development works in the state, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant convened a high-level review meeting on Friday. The primary agenda was to assess the progress of crucial infrastructure projects, especially those funded by a substantial central grant.
Focus on Central-Funded Infrastructure
The meeting placed special emphasis on projects worth a total of Rs 512.9 crore. These initiatives are being financed under the Government of India's Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme. CM Sawant conducted a thorough examination of the overall implementation status, the utilisation of allocated funds, and the adherence to set timelines for these projects.
"I reviewed the overall implementation status, utilisation of funds, and timelines," stated Chief Minister Sawant after the meeting. He issued clear instructions to all executing departments, directing them to expedite the infrastructure works and strengthen coordination among themselves. The ultimate goal, as emphasized by Sawant, is to ensure timely completion so that "the intended benefits reach the people of Goa at the earliest."
Wide-Ranging Projects and Fiscal Health
The projects under review spanned multiple key departments of the Goa government. These included major works under the Public Works Department (PWD), the Tourism Department, critical waste management initiatives, and projects handled by the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), among others.
On the fiscal front, the Chief Minister also reviewed the state's borrowings. He described the current level of fiscal borrowings as sustainable. As of now, the state has borrowed Rs 1,300 crore through state development loans against a total borrowing limit of Rs 3,200 crore permitted by the central government.
Commitment to Timely Development and Future Plans
Providing a concrete timeline for project delivery, CM Sawant announced that 77% of the assurances for infrastructure works will be implemented in the current financial year. The remaining projects are expected to spill over into the next fiscal year due to the nature of construction work. He reiterated his government's unwavering commitment to fast-tracking development projects that are vital for the state's economic growth.
Beyond infrastructure, the meeting also addressed operational efficiency. The Chief Minister directed officers to ensure strong inter-departmental coordination specifically for waste management. Furthermore, discussions were held on strategies to secure further assistance from the Centre to meet both present and future requirements of various state departments.
