Goa Government Temporarily Suspends LPG Supply to Industries, Focuses on Domestic Needs
In a significant move to address supply chain disruptions, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Friday that the state government has temporarily halted LPG supply to industries across Goa. The decision, aimed at prioritizing domestic consumption, comes amid concerns over cylinder availability, but Sawant assured that the industrial supply will be restored promptly.
Domestic Consumers Reassured Amid Supply Concerns
Chief Minister Sawant emphasized that there is no cause for panic among domestic consumers, as sufficient LPG cylinder quotas are currently available in the state. He detailed new measures to streamline distribution, including the implementation of an online booking system for LPG dealers to refill cylinders. This digital approach is expected to enhance efficiency and reduce overcrowding at dealer outlets.
"Within the next week, all the issues related to LPG cylinders for domestic consumers will be resolved," Sawant stated confidently. He added that the state government is also working diligently to sort out supply challenges for commercial consumers, who are facing an estimated 80% shortage in commercial LPG cylinders.
High-Level Committee Reviews LPG Availability
To tackle the situation, Sawant convened a high-level committee meeting to review the availability of LPG cylinders in Goa. The meeting was attended by key officials, including Chief Secretary V. Candavelou, representatives from oil marketing companies, and senior state officials. This collaborative effort underscores the government's commitment to resolving the supply issues comprehensively.
During the meeting, it was decided that dealers will base commercial cylinder deliveries on the average quota supplied over the last three months, ensuring a fair and systematic distribution process. "Both central and state governments are closely monitoring LPG cylinder availability," Sawant noted, highlighting the coordinated approach.
New Regulations and Safety Measures Introduced
In an effort to prevent hoarding and ensure equitable access, Sawant announced strict regulations for domestic consumers. Without online booking and after completing a mandatory waiting period of 25 days following receipt of a cylinder, no additional LPG cylinders will be issued for domestic use. "People should not go to the dealers without booking," he urged, advising against storing LPG cylinders at home due to safety risks.
To further bolster monitoring, a taluka nodal officer has been appointed to collect daily reports from LPG dealers, providing real-time insights into cylinder availability across the state. Additionally, police are actively involved in overseeing the situation to maintain order and compliance.
Encouraging Shift to Piped Natural Gas (PNG)
Looking toward long-term solutions, Chief Minister Sawant encouraged domestic consumers to transition from LPG cylinders to piped natural gas (PNG) wherever it is available. This shift is part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on cylinder-based systems and enhance energy security in Goa.
As the state navigates these temporary supply challenges, the government's proactive measures aim to balance industrial and domestic needs while ensuring safety and efficiency in LPG distribution.
