Karapur Villagers Launch Indefinite Agitation Against Real Estate Development
In a significant display of grassroots resistance, approximately 150 residents of Karapur village in Bicholim, Goa, initiated an indefinite protest on Sunday. The villagers, united under the banner 'Karapur Gramastha Ekjuticho Aawaz', are demanding the immediate cancellation of a proposed large-scale real estate project by The House of Abhinandan Lodha.
Environmental and Resource Concerns at the Forefront
The core of the protest revolves around deep-seated fears regarding environmental degradation and resource depletion. Villagers have articulated strong concerns that the extensive development will lead to the destruction of vital water bodies and the felling of numerous trees, irreparably harming the local ecosystem.
Local resident Deepesh Talkar emphasized the potential strain on village infrastructure, stating, "Once the project becomes a reality and new residents move in, our village's limited resources will come under immense pressure. Our existing water and power supply systems will be severely affected." He further criticized the local governance, asserting that the panchayat should have secured the gram sabha's consent before granting any permissions for the project.
Escalating Water Crisis and United Front
Another villager, Gaurish Ghadi, highlighted the pre-existing challenges, noting, "Our village is already grappling with a significant water shortage. Allowing this project to proceed will only worsen the situation, pushing our community to a breaking point." The protesters have vowed to maintain their agitation until their demands are fully met, with Deepraj Mandrekar affirming their resolve to continue indefinitely.
The movement has garnered support from social activists and local political figures. Social activist Swapnesh Sherlekar warned that the community is prepared to approach the highest authorities in the country if necessary to ensure the project is scrapped. Siddhesh Tari, a local resident, called for unwavering unity among villagers until their objectives are achieved.
Political Allegations and Broader Support
The protest saw participation from several Congress functionaries, who leveled serious allegations against the state government. They accused Town and Country Planning Minister Vishwajit Rane and his wife, Deviya Rane, of backing the controversial project. The protestors have called upon Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to intervene and revoke all permissions granted to the developer.
The agitation also received backing from local leaders, including panchayat member Ujwala Kavlekar and activist Ajay Prabhugaonkar, underscoring the widespread community opposition to the real estate venture. The villagers' stand represents a critical juncture in the ongoing debate between developmental projects and sustainable environmental stewardship in the region.
