Goa's 5-Day Winter Session from Jan 12: Spotlight on ZP Polls & Safety
Goa Winter Session: 5-day assembly from Jan 12

Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju has officially summoned a brief winter session for the Goa Legislative Assembly. The session is scheduled to run for five days, commencing on January 12. This political gathering is set against the crucial backdrop of the upcoming Zilla Panchayat (ZP) election results, which are due on December 22, and is expected to feature heated debates on public safety in the tourism sector.

Session Agenda and Political Backdrop

The first day of the assembly will be dedicated to the traditional Governor's address. From the second day onward, the government will focus on its legislative business. This includes passing supplementary demands and government bills. The session will also feature question hour, where the state government will answer both starred and unstarred questions from the members.

The detailed schedule for the five-day session will be finalized in a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC). Political observers note that the results of the ZP elections will significantly influence the dynamics within the house. A victory for the opposition could provide them with ammunition to corner the government on various issues. Conversely, if the ruling party secures a win, it is likely to use the public mandate as a shield against criticism.

Opposition Readies for Confrontation

Leader of the Opposition, Yuri Alemao, has already launched a sharp critique of the government, accusing it of avoiding scrutiny. He expressed disappointment over the short duration of the session, stating they had expected the government to be "afraid" of convening a session longer than a week.

"With the winter session of the eighth legislative assembly summoned, and that too for just five days including the governor’s address, I am committed to fighting for our Goem and our people," Alemao said. He vowed that the opposition would unitedly grill the government over what he termed as its failures, corruption ("dadagiri"), illegalities, misuse of power, and collapsed administration.

Key Issues on the Table

Beyond the routine government business, the opposition plans to raise several pressing matters. A primary focus will be the safety and security within Goa's vital tourism industry. This issue has gained urgent attention following the tragic fire at Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora, which claimed 25 lives. The session will offer a platform for legislators to demand accountability and discuss measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

The short but significant winter session is poised to be a battleground where the ruling dispensation and the opposition will lock horns, with the shadow of the ZP election results looming large over the proceedings.
