Goa's Vehicle Count Hits 14.5 Lakh, Nearing One Per Person

Goa's Vehicle Population Surges to 14.5 Lakh, Approaching One Vehicle Per Resident

According to the latest Economic Survey 2025-26, Goa's vehicular population has reached a significant milestone, climbing to 14.5 lakh vehicles by December 31, 2025. This marks a substantial increase of nearly one lakh vehicles from the 13.5 lakh recorded in 2024, highlighting rapid growth in personal mobility across the state.

Vehicle Density Nears One Per Person

With Goa's population standing at 15.8 lakh residents as per the same survey, the vehicle count translates to approximately 0.9 vehicles per person, or about 91 vehicles for every 100 residents. This high density underscores the widespread reliance on personal transport in the coastal state.

Two-Wheelers Dominate the Roadscape

Two-wheelers continue to form the backbone of Goa's vehicle fleet. In 2025, official figures show 8.9 lakh motorcycles and scooters registered as non-transport vehicles. When combined with other categories:

  • 22,866 mopeds
  • 405 motorised cycles (above 25 cc)
  • Motorcycles with sidecars and related types

The total number of two-wheelers exceeds 9 lakh, accounting for the largest share of vehicles on Goa's roads. This dominance mirrors the 2024 trend, when two-wheelers numbered 8.6 lakh.

Private Vehicles Overwhelm Public Transport

Data from the directorate of transport reveals a stark imbalance between private and public transport. Non-transport vehicles, primarily used for personal purposes, make up over 13 lakh registrations, while total transport vehicles account for just 1.4 lakh. This disparity places escalating pressure on the state's road infrastructure.

Commercial and Tourism-Related Vehicles

Within the transport sector, taxis play a crucial role in serving Goa's booming tourism industry. With 36,600 vehicles registered for commercial passenger service, taxis constitute approximately 2.5% of the total vehicle fleet, shuttling thousands of visitors daily.

Additionally, motorcycles and scooters for hire have emerged as a popular option for flexible travel. With 27,918 vehicles registered for hire, these two-wheelers make up 2% of the total vehicles available for rental, catering to both tourists and locals seeking quick mobility.

The figures from the Economic Survey 2025-26 paint a clear picture of Goa's transportation landscape, where private vehicle ownership is rapidly expanding, potentially challenging sustainable urban mobility and infrastructure planning in the years ahead.
