Gujarat Local Body Elections: Nomination Process Concludes with High Participation

The nomination period for Gujarat's urban and rural local body elections officially closed on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in the state's electoral process. A total of 32,748 nominations have been filed across 9,992 seats, according to preliminary data from the State Election Commission (SEC). However, this figure is subject to change following initial scrutiny, which will verify the validity of all submissions.

Potential Uncontested Seats and Multi-Cornered Contests

In a notable development, approximately 70 seats across various local bodies saw no candidates from the Congress, AAP, other parties, or independents filing nominations against BJP nominees. This raises the possibility of these seats being won unopposed, though the final picture will only emerge after the withdrawal deadline on April 15. The election is expected to be fiercely contested, with the BJP, Congress, AAP, smaller parties, and independents all vying for dominance in a multi-cornered fight.

Voter Turnout and Electoral Structure

A massive electorate of 4.19 crore out of Gujarat's 4.40 crore eligible voters is set to participate in the polls on April 26. Elections will be conducted using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) from 7 am to 6 pm, with counting scheduled for April 28. The polls cover a wide range of local bodies, including 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats.

These include Karamsad-Anand, Gandhidham, Nadiad, Navsari, Porbandar, Mehsana, Morbi, Vapi, and Surendranagar. The BJP currently holds power in the remaining six corporations: Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, and Jamnagar.

Nomination Details and By-Elections

By Saturday evening, a detailed breakdown of nominations showed 3,040 filed for municipalities, 5,784 for district panchayats, and 19,282 for taluka panchayats. Additionally, by-elections will be held for 13 seats across 11 municipalities, adding another layer to the electoral landscape.

Historic Context and First-Time Implementations

The SEC commissioner highlighted that this election is historic for several reasons. It is the first major election held after the implementation of 27% OBC reservation, aimed at enhancing representation. Moreover, it marks the inaugural polls for the nine new municipal corporations, seven new municipalities, and several new taluka panchayats, reflecting ongoing administrative expansions in Gujarat.
