Guwahati's New Dinesh Goswami Flyover Inaugurated to Combat Traffic Woes

In a significant move to address urban traffic challenges, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Dinesh Goswami flyover in Guwahati on Wednesday. Named after the former Union Minister of Law and Justice, this infrastructure project is designed to alleviate congestion and enhance connectivity along the busy Bharalumukh stretch of the city.

Project Details and Cost

Constructed at a cost of Rs 99 crore, the 1.2-kilometer flyover spans over a railway crossing between Bharalumukh and Santipur. This strategic location is expected to significantly ease travel for daily commuters, with particular benefits for school students and emergency services like ambulances.

Road Structure and Design Features

Speaking at the inauguration, CM Sarma detailed the flyover's road layout. "From Santipur, it will be a two-lane road, while the descent towards Bharalumukh will be a single lane. The return elevated corridor towards Santipur will also feature one lane," he explained. Additionally, commuters traveling from Santipur towards Bharalumukh, Kamakhya, or Sukleshwar will access a two-lane stretch at the flyover's midpoint, optimizing traffic flow.

Rapid Construction and Future Projects

The flyover was developed in consultation with the railway department and completed by the public works department in just 15 months, well ahead of the original 24-month deadline. Sarma highlighted this as a remarkable achievement for a project of this scale. He also announced upcoming infrastructure initiatives, including the Noonmati–Ambari flyover set to open on March 10 and the Cycle Factory flyover scheduled for inauguration before Bihu. If election dates interfere, the latter will be opened to the public without formal ceremonies to ensure relief from traffic congestion during the festive period.

Context and Regional Impact

This inauguration follows the recent opening of the Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month, underscoring a broader push for improved urban infrastructure in Assam. The Dinesh Goswami flyover is poised to transform daily commutes and support the city's growing transportation needs.
