Congress-Led Protest Erupts in Hajipur Over Infrastructure Neglect and Illegal Mining
Anger and frustration boiled over on the streets of Hajipur in Punjab's kandi area on Saturday, as a significant protest was organized by residents and Congress party workers. The demonstration targeted the deplorable state of local roads and the rampant illegal mining activities plaguing the region.
Massive Road March Highlights Public Grievances
A large gathering, spearheaded by senior Congress leader Sarabjot Singh Sabi, initiated a road march to voice their discontent. Participants brandished black flags and chanted slogans condemning the Punjab Government for its perceived inaction. The protest commenced at the Mansar road turn in Hajipur early in the morning.
The procession navigated through key areas, including the route past the government hospital and senior secondary school in Hajipur, advancing towards Sariyana, Bhavnal, and Jhang roads. This strategic path underscored the widespread impact of the infrastructure crisis.
Severe Hardships for Local Villages
For an extended period, the roads in this region have been in an extremely poor condition, causing severe hardships for inhabitants of approximately 10 to 15 nearby villages. The crumbling infrastructure has disrupted daily life, making travel dangerous and inefficient for residents.
During the protest, Sabi launched a sharp critique against the state administration. He emphasized that despite being in power for over four years, the government has consistently failed to address the urgent need for road repairs in the kandi area, leaving communities stranded and neglected.
Allegations of Complicity in Illegal Mining
In addition to road issues, Sabi raised serious allegations regarding illegal mining operations. He claimed that these activities are being conducted with the alleged support of concerned authorities. Protesters pointed out that overloaded trucks, often without visible number plates, are moving freely through the area, while officials remain conspicuously silent.
This unchecked mining not only violates environmental and legal norms but also exacerbates the degradation of local infrastructure, further compounding the residents' woes.
Ultimatum Issued at Sariana Village
The march culminated at Sariana village, where participants issued a stern warning to the authorities. They demanded immediate action to repair the roads and halt all illegal mining activities. Failure to comply, they cautioned, would result in a stronger and more intensified agitation in the near future.
