The uproar, which erupted after the question hour, saw Congress MLAs staging a protest, alleging that democracy had been stifled, while BJP members countered with their own symbolic gestures.
Congress Alleges Democratic Subversion
Congress MLA Raghuvir Singh Kadian initiated the confrontation by raising the issue of the Rajya Sabha polls. He argued that both the Congress and BJP had sufficient numbers to secure one seat each, with the Congress holding 37 MLAs and the BJP 48, resulting in a nearly equal vote share of 47 percent. "Where was the need to bring a third candidate? Democracy has been stifled," Kadian declared, sparking a heated exchange.
Slogan War and Symbolic Gestures
The situation quickly escalated as Congress MLAs surged into the well of the House, chanting slogans like "vote chor, gaddi chhodd" (vote thieves, resign). In response, BJP MLAs, led by Minister Krishan Bedi and Gaurav Gautam, held up both hands to show the number nine. Speaker's Intervention and Adjournment
Speaker Harvinder Kalyan made repeated attempts to restore order, urging MLAs to return to their seats. "This is not an issue of the House. Discuss this in your respective parties," he asserted. However, with neither side heeding his calls, the Speaker was compelled to adjourn the House for 15 minutes to cool tempers.
