Chandigarh: Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee president Rao Narendra Singh on Friday termed the Haryana government's recent advisory barring permissions for public rallies, meetings and processions until September 2026 a "draconian order," alleging it was an attack on democratic rights disguised as a fuel-conservation measure.
Allegations of Suppression
Singh alleged that the government was attempting to suppress public dissent amid growing discontent over issues such as farmers' concerns, unemployment, inflation, paper leak incidents in recruitment examinations, shortcomings in the education sector, rising crimes against women and questions over law and order.
He said the right to peaceful assembly and democratic protest is protected under the Constitution and cannot be curtailed through administrative measures. He demanded immediate withdrawal of what he termed an "undemocratic restriction" and accused the government of targeting opposition parties, farmers, workers, students and civil society groups.
Condemns Move to Rename Ambedkar Libraries
Singh also criticised the Haryana government's reported decision to rename Dr B R Ambedkar libraries, describing it as "insensitive and contrary to the principles of social justice." He said Ambedkar symbolised constitutional values, equality and education, and removing his name from public institutions would hurt the sentiments of marginalised communities and citizens who revere the Constitution.
He urged the government to restore the original names of the libraries and respect Ambedkar's legacy.
