Hasanpreet Bhardwaj Elected First Mayor of Barnala

Hasanpreet Bhardwaj, a 35-year-old former Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Sangrur MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, was elected as the first Mayor of Barnala on Wednesday. The election marks a significant milestone for the city, which was upgraded to a Municipal Corporation in October last year, becoming the 14th such entity in the state of Punjab.

Background of the New Mayor

Before entering the political arena, Hasanpreet Bhardwaj served as a patwari in the Revenue Department. He is a first-time councillor, representing Ward No. 44. His candidacy for the Mayor post was approved on Wednesday, paving the way for his election. Bhardwaj is considered a close aide of MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, who played a key role in his political rise.

Upgradation of Barnala

The transition of Barnala from a Municipal Council to a Municipal Corporation was finalized in October of the previous year. This upgradation is expected to bring more administrative autonomy and financial resources to the city, enabling better infrastructure and services for its residents. The new corporation will have a mayor-council system, with the mayor serving as the ceremonial head and the commissioner as the executive authority.

Political Landscape

In the recently held municipal elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) emerged victorious in 36 out of the 50 wards. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured seven seats, while Independents won five, and the Congress party managed to clinch only two seats. Despite the Congress's poor performance in the municipal polls, Barnala is represented in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha by Congress legislator Kuldeep Singh Kala Dhillon.

Post-Election Reactions

Following the election, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer addressed the media, congratulating the new mayor and expressing confidence in his leadership. They highlighted the AAP's commitment to development and good governance in Barnala.

Future Prospects

As the first mayor of Barnala Municipal Corporation, Hasanpreet Bhardwaj faces the challenge of fulfilling the aspirations of the city's residents. Key priorities are expected to include improving civic amenities, addressing infrastructure gaps, and ensuring transparent governance. With a strong majority in the corporation, the AAP is well-positioned to implement its agenda.
