Robust Voter Participation Marks Coastal Polling in Thiruvananthapuram
Polling across the coastal belt of Thiruvananthapuram district witnessed a brisk and steady turnout on Thursday, with voters arriving in substantial numbers from the early morning hours. From Kanjiramkulam to Vizhinjam and Poonthura, long queues formed outside polling stations shortly after voting commenced, reflecting strong civic engagement.
Key Polling Stations and Voter Demographics
At prominent polling locations such as St Philomena GHSS in Poonthura, the harbour engineering department office in Vizhinjam, St Mary's GHSS in Kottapuram, and GHS Beemapally, voters waited patiently despite rising temperatures. Women and elderly citizens constituted a significant portion of the early crowd, underscoring the inclusive nature of the electoral process.
Election officials facilitated the voting experience by providing essential amenities, including drinking water and shaded waiting areas, to ensure a smoother procedure for all participants.
Voter Sentiments and Community Involvement
"I came early because I didn't want to miss my vote," stated Sheeja Beegum, a resident of Vizhinjam. "No matter how busy we are or how hot it gets, voting is our responsibility. We want a better future for our children, and this is how we can contribute."
Many fishermen, returning from overnight fishing expeditions, opted to rest during the morning and proceeded to polling stations in the afternoon. "We came after getting some rest," explained Francilas, a fisherman from Poonthura. "Fishing at night is tiring, but voting is important. We cannot ignore it. This election matters to our livelihoods and our coast."
Peaceful Proceedings and Security Measures
Despite several coastal polling booths being classified as sensitive, the day transpired peacefully with no reports of untoward incidents. Tight security arrangements and a visible police presence helped maintain order among voters throughout the process.
Incident of Bogus Voting
However, officials confirmed one instance of bogus voting at a polling booth. A woman voter was left shocked upon arriving at the booth and discovering that her vote had already been cast by an imposter. Producing her voter ID card, she engaged in a prolonged argument with officials, insisting she had not voted. Although authorities suggested she cast a tender vote, she declined and eventually departed the premises. This incident occurred at the booth established at Govt LPS, Kidarakkudi, within the Kovalam constituency.
Medical Emergency Involving Elderly Voter
In a separate occurrence, an elderly woman collapsed after casting her vote. The incident took place as she was exiting the polling booth alongside her husband. Identified as Sindhu (Mercy, 62), she had arrived at Bethlehem School in Azhakulam with her husband, Sathikumar, around noon. She collapsed near the booth premises shortly after departing and was promptly transported to MCH for medical attention. Reports indicate she had a pre-existing heart condition.
