Himachal Civic Poll Results Reflect Public Anger Against BJP: CM Sukhu
Himachal Civic Poll Results Show Public Anger Against BJP

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday said the results of the civic polls in the state clearly reflect the public's anger against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its anti-people policies and neglect of development works. The Congress party secured victories in key municipal committees, including Solan, Palampur, and Baijnath, among others.

Congress Sweeps Civic Polls

In the elections held for 39 municipal bodies across the state, the Congress emerged as the dominant party, winning the chairperson posts in 22 committees. The BJP managed to secure only 12, while independent candidates won five. The results were declared on Sunday after a peaceful polling process.

CM Sukhu's Reaction

Chief Minister Sukhu stated, "The people of Himachal have rejected the BJP's divisive politics and lack of development. They have reposed their faith in the Congress party's vision for progress and welfare." He added that the victory was a mandate against the BJP's "misrule" at the Centre and in the state.

BJP's Response

The BJP, however, dismissed the results as a reflection of local issues and not a national trend. State BJP president Rajiv Bindal said the party would analyze the defeats and work on strengthening its grassroots presence. He attributed some losses to internal factionalism.

Key Wins and Losses

Key victories for the Congress include Solan, where party candidate Sanjeev Kumar won by a margin of over 2,000 votes. In Palampur, Congress's Rajesh Sharma defeated his nearest BJP rival by 1,500 votes. The BJP managed to retain its hold in some areas like Dharamshala and Mandi, but lost several traditional strongholds.

Voter Turnout

The elections saw a voter turnout of around 70%, indicating high public interest. The State Election Commission reported that the polling was largely peaceful, with no major incidents of violence. The results are seen as a litmus test for the ruling Congress government, which came to power in December 2022.

Political Implications

Political analysts view the outcome as a boost for the Congress government, which has faced criticism over law and order and economic issues. The results also come ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where Himachal Pradesh sends four members to the lower house. The BJP had hoped to gain ground in the state after its recent success in some by-elections.

Chief Minister Sukhu said the Congress would now focus on fulfilling its promises, including the Old Pension Scheme and employment generation. He urged the opposition to cooperate in the state's development rather than spreading negativity.
