Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Abolishes Service Extensions, Sets Panchayat Election Deadline
In a significant administrative reform, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Wednesday that the state government will no longer grant service extensions or re-employment to officers and employees after March 31. The declaration was made during a media briefing in Shimla, following the CM's return from Assam.
End of the Extension Era in Himachal
The Chief Minister firmly stated that the system of granting extensions has been officially abolished across the state. This move aims to streamline governance and promote fresh appointments. However, Sukhu provided a crucial clarification: cases where extensions have already been approved under previous orders will remain valid only for their originally specified durations.
An important exception to this new rule has been carved out for the healthcare sector. Recognizing the critical need for medical expertise, the government may appoint doctors after retirement, particularly associate professors in medical colleges, to ensure that essential healthcare services remain uninterrupted and of high quality.
Panchayat Elections Scheduled and Political Commentary
In addition to the administrative changes, CM Sukhu confirmed that panchayat elections in Himachal Pradesh will be conducted before May 31. This announcement comes amid legal scrutiny, as the high court has issued a stay on the state government's decision to allow deputy commissioners to alter the reservation roster for panchayat polls by up to 5% of the total panchayats.
Addressing this development, Sukhu remarked, "The cabinet takes decisions based on governance needs, while the court performs its constitutional duty." He further accused the opposition BJP of raising these issues primarily for political gains, rather than genuine public concern.
Commitment to HimCare Health Scheme Amidst Audit Findings
Reaffirming his government's dedication to public welfare, Chief Minister Sukhu assured that the HimCare health scheme, initiated by the previous BJP administration, will not be discontinued. Instead, it will be improved and strengthened to better serve the residents of Himachal Pradesh.
However, Sukhu did not shy away from criticizing the previous regime. He revealed that an internal audit of the HimCare scheme has uncovered irregularities amounting to approximately Rs 110 crore. This finding underscores the need for enhanced transparency and accountability in the scheme's implementation moving forward.
The Chief Minister's announcements mark a clear shift in administrative policy, emphasizing efficiency, electoral timelines, and healthcare priorities, while also setting the stage for continued political debate in the state.
