Himachal Pradesh Government Completes Formation of 39 New Panchayats

The Himachal Pradesh government has successfully completed the formation process for 39 out of the total 40 newly proposed panchayats. The panchayati raj department has officially issued notifications for these new local governing bodies, marking a significant step in the state's administrative expansion.

Increase in Total Panchayats and Remaining Issues

With the addition of these 39 new panchayats, the total number of panchayats in Himachal Pradesh has risen to 3,616, up from the previous count of 3,577. This expansion aims to enhance local governance and community representation across the state.

However, one panchayat in the Mandi district has faced some procedural issues. The department has committed to resolving these by carrying out a re-demarcation process to finalize the boundaries of the newly created panchayats. This corrective action is expected to be completed within a week, ensuring all new bodies are properly established.

Supreme Court Directive and Election Preparations

Following a directive from the Supreme Court of India, the state government is mandated to hold elections to the panchayati raj institutions (PRIs) before May 31. In response, the state election commission has accelerated its preparations to meet this critical deadline.

Elections for the PRIs are likely to be conducted in three separate phases, although the authorities have not yet taken a final decision on the exact schedule. This phased approach is designed to manage the logistical complexities of the electoral process across the state's diverse regions.

Logistical Arrangements for the Upcoming Elections

To ensure smooth and efficient elections, the state election commission plans to deploy nearly 35,000 staff members. These personnel will be responsible for various election-related duties, from polling station management to voter assistance.

Additionally, approximately 22,000 polling stations will be set up across Himachal Pradesh to accommodate voters from all communities. This extensive infrastructure underscores the scale of the upcoming electoral exercise and the state's commitment to democratic participation at the grassroots level.

The formation of new panchayats and the impending PRI elections represent a pivotal moment for local governance in Himachal Pradesh, aligning with national efforts to strengthen decentralized administration and community-led development.
