Himachal Pradesh Honors Military Legacy with Rs 17 Crore Welfare Disbursement
In a significant move to honor its military heritage, Himachal Pradesh has distributed more than Rs 17 crore in welfare benefits to veterans, gallantry-award recipients, and the families of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the current financial year. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced this expansive support package on Tuesday, emphasizing that the state's veterans are not just former employees but invaluable assets whose contributions form the bedrock of regional pride.
Comprehensive Financial Support for Nearly 2,300 Beneficiaries
The financial allocation was meticulously targeted to ensure sustained economic security for those who served on the front lines and their loved ones. The disbursement breakdown includes:
- Rs 7.62 crore allocated to 57 dependants of soldiers killed or disabled in action, providing crucial financial stability.
- Rs 6.12 crore in financial security pensions distributed to 968 defence retirees, supporting their post-service lives.
- Rs 3 crore in honorariums awarded to 1,084 soldiers recognized for exceptional courage, acknowledging their bravery.
- Rs 20.8 lakh under traditional bravery grants or War Jagir, benefiting 154 individuals for their valor.
This initiative underscores the state's commitment to ensuring that the sacrifices of its military personnel are met with tangible support, fostering a sense of security and appreciation among beneficiaries.
Investing in Future Military Recruitment and Training
Beyond supporting those who have already served, the Sukhu administration is proactively funding initiatives to bolster future military recruitment. The Chief Minister sanctioned Rs 2.28 crore to facilitate Army recruitment rallies across key districts, including Kangra, Mandi, Hamirpur, and Shimla. Additionally, an expansion project worth Rs 10.2 crore is underway at the Major Somnath Training Academy in Mandi.
Named after India's first Param Vir Chakra recipient, this academy is designed to provide competitive training for local youth aspiring to join the armed forces. Himachal Pradesh holds a distinguished position as one of India's most significant per capita contributors to the military, with four recipients of the Param Vir Chakra—the nation's highest military decoration.
