Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Seeks Sixth Consecutive Term from Jalukbari

In a display of political strength and public support, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially filed his nomination papers on Friday, aiming for a sixth consecutive term from his home constituency of Jalukbari. The event, held at the Hengrabari election office in Guwahati, was marked by a vibrant and rain-soaked procession that underscored his deep-rooted connection with the electorate.

A Grand Procession Amid Incessant Rains

Demonstrating his political might, CM Sarma embarked on a 5.6-kilometer journey from the Veterinary Field in Khanapara to the election office, leading a massive show of strength. Thousands of supporters, with a significant majority being women, braved heavy rains to accompany him in an open-top car. The procession was a spectacle of devotion, featuring cut-outs, banners, and air-rending slogans that echoed through the streets.

The beats of traditional Assamese and Punjabi dhols filled the air, adding a cultural fervor to the occasion. Along the route, Sarma was greeted by traditional ‘gayan-bayan’ performers, Bihu dancers, and drummers, highlighting the rich heritage of Assam. This enthusiastic turnout, despite adverse weather conditions, reflected the unwavering support for the veteran leader.

Family and Party Leaders in Attendance

Accompanied by his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma and son Nandil Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister shared a personal moment by clicking a selfie with them, symbolizing family unity in his political journey. The procession also included prominent BJP figures such as Gauhati Lok Sabha MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi and Mayor Mrigen Sarania, showcasing party solidarity.

Dividing his journey into two halves, Sarma got off the vehicle at Last Gate in Dispur, walked for a few minutes to connect with the crowd, and then took another vehicle to reach the office of the district commissioner-cum-district electoral officer. This interactive approach emphasized his accessibility and grassroots engagement.

Seeking Blessings and Expressing Gratitude

Prior to filing his nomination, CM Sarma sought blessings from his mother, Mrinalini Devi, emphasizing the importance of maternal support in auspicious occasions. In a post on X, he stated, “Auspicious occasions should always begin with mother’s blessings. Though I don’t get to spend much time with her these days, her blessings always power me to continue serving Aai Asomi (mother Assam).”

He expressed heartfelt gratitude towards his supporters for turning up despite the heavy showers and urged people to bless him and all candidates from the BJP and its allies—Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF). This gesture highlighted his inclusive approach and commitment to coalition politics.

Campaign Strategy and National Support

Addressing the media, Sarma outlined his campaign strategy, noting that he would not be able to campaign extensively in his own constituency due to commitments in other seats. He mentioned that party workers would manage his local campaign, while he and his wife Riniki would visit key places. Sarma plans to address five to six meetings daily, demonstrating a rigorous schedule.

Shedding light on the involvement of national leaders, he revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address three meetings, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will conduct six to eight meetings. This national backing underscores the significance of the Assam elections in the broader political landscape.

Family Perspectives and Future Commitments

Describing the occasion as a “very happy moment,” Riniki Bhuyan Sarma shared her insights, stating, “The people of Jalukbari consider Himanta as the head of the family, and this huge gathering shows their support and blessings for him.” She emphasized his long-standing service to the public over the past 25 years and pledged to continue assisting in his campaign, as she has done in previous elections.
