Hunger Strike Erupts in Goa Over Controversial Garden Construction Plan

A proposed two-storeyed structure by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) inside the Margao municipal garden has sparked significant public outcry and protests. The controversy centers on fears that the new construction will irreparably damage the garden's heritage value.

Congress Leader Launches Hunger Strike in Protest

Congress functionary Chirag Naik took a dramatic stand on Friday by launching a hunger strike directly inside the municipal garden. Despite attempts by police to stop him, the businessman proceeded with his protest, drawing local residents to join him in solidarity.

"The heritage value of the garden will be destroyed with such construction," Naik declared, emphasizing the cultural and historical significance of the site.

Community Opposition and Formal Complaints

The protest has gained momentum with Prabhav Naik of Madganvcho Awaaz submitting a formal written complaint to GSIDC. The letter demands an immediate halt to the tender process for the Rs 4 crore project, highlighting growing community resistance.

Key dates in the tender process include:

  • Deadline for submitting tenders: March 27
  • Tender opening date: March 30

Municipal Council's Position on the Project

Margao Municipal Council (MMC) chairperson Damodar Shirodkar has provided clarification on the project's intent. According to Shirodkar, the plan involves reconstructing the existing RCC structure—currently used for the annual Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav celebrations—with the addition of seating space on the upper floor.

This explanation has done little to quell the protests, as opponents argue that any new construction, regardless of its purpose, threatens the garden's historical integrity and communal character.

The situation remains tense as the hunger strike continues and the tender deadline approaches, putting pressure on authorities to reconsider the development plan amidst strong public sentiment.
