Hyderabad CM Revanth Reddy Unveils Plan for New Core Urban Area Act

In a significant move to streamline urban governance, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to prepare a Core Urban Area Act that will replace the existing Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Act. This new legislation is set to apply specifically to the three corporations located within the Outer Ring Road, designated as the Core Urban Region Economy (CURE).

Comprehensive Framework for Urban Management

During a review meeting on municipal administration and urban development held at the Secretariat on Friday, the CM emphasized that the proposed law should serve as the foundational basis for all permissions, fees, development work, and related matters within the municipal limits. "In our 99-day programme, the government will carry out work within the municipal limits with great pride," Revanth stated, underscoring the administration's commitment to efficient urban management.

Prioritizing Sanitation and Waste Disposal

Revanth Reddy highlighted sanitation as a top priority for the Core Urban Region Economy. He pointed out that in many areas, residents lack clear guidance on rubbish disposal, leading to waste being dumped in empty spaces. "Action should be taken against those who throw rubbish anywhere instead of in the designated areas," he asserted. The CM suggested that authorities first identify and mark specific areas for rubbish disposal with proper signage to address this issue effectively.

Accountability in Road Construction and Maintenance

Regarding infrastructure, the Chief Minister called for responsible handling of road construction in the core urban area. "Once a road has been constructed, its lifespan should be determined, and if the road needs to be rebuilt, officials should be held accountable," he said. To eliminate jurisdictional confusion, Revanth proposed that all roads under the jurisdiction of the Roads and Buildings (R&B) department and other agencies in the core urban area should come under the purview of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) department.

Enhancing Food Safety and Fire Prevention Measures

On the topic of public safety, Revanth Reddy issued directives for food safety enhancements, ordering the installation of CCTV cameras in the kitchens of all hotels across the city. These cameras are to be connected to a central command control center, with frequent inspections and continuous monitoring to ensure compliance.

Furthermore, the CM instructed officials to prioritize fire safety in the core urban area, particularly in high-rise buildings. "Advanced equipment and technology must be provided to prevent fire hazards in buildings with more than 50 floors," he emphasized, aiming to bolster urban resilience against potential disasters.

Additional Development Initiatives

Revanth Reddy also set deadlines for the completion of government offices within Bharat Future City and called for the development of large ponds and lakes in Hyderabad. Additionally, he suggested installing water harvesting wells in the city's districts to collect rainwater, promoting sustainable water management practices.

This comprehensive approach by the Chief Minister signals a transformative phase in Hyderabad's urban planning, with the new Core Urban Area Act poised to redefine governance and development in the city's core regions.
