Hyderabad Chief Minister Orders Major Overhaul of MMTS Public Transport System
In a decisive move to address the growing need for an efficient public transport system within Hyderabad's core urban region economy, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed officials to formulate comprehensive plans to revitalize and strengthen the city's Multi Modal Transport Service.
Addressing Declining Ridership and Service Issues
During a detailed review meeting held at the council meeting hall on Thursday, the Chief Minister specifically sought explanations for the significant decline in MMTS passenger numbers in recent years. Officials reportedly informed him that punctuality problems with MMTS trains have led many commuters to prefer the Metro service instead.
"The railways had reduced the number of services since the Covid-19 pandemic," officials noted, explaining the current limitations. Presently, MMTS operations are confined to specific stretches including:
- Secunderabad to Nampally
- Secunderabad to Lingampally
- Secunderabad to Falaknuma
Key Directives for Service Improvement
Chief Minister Reddy issued several crucial instructions to enhance MMTS operations:
- Increase service frequency during peak hours while maintaining strict punctuality standards
- Explore the feasibility of operating mini-buses to provide seamless last-mile connectivity to MMTS stations, many of which are situated away from main roads and lack direct RTC bus connections
- Provide necessary passenger amenities at all MMTS stations, with the CM emphasizing that "commuters would definitely opt for MMTS services only when good amenities were provided"
Focus on Revenue Generation and Comprehensive Planning
While reviewing revenue generation from MMTS services, Revanth Reddy suggested enhancing self-generated revenue sources. He directed authorities to conduct a thorough study and submit a detailed report addressing multiple aspects of service improvement:
- Strategies to increase passenger numbers
- Plans to improve station amenities
- Measures to strengthen last-mile connectivity
This comprehensive approach aims to transform MMTS into a more attractive and efficient transportation option for Hyderabad's growing urban population, addressing both immediate operational issues and long-term sustainability concerns.
