Major Fire Guts 22 Furniture Shops in Hyderabad's Pragathi Nagar, No Casualties Reported
A devastating fire that raged for nearly nine hours completely gutted at least twenty-two makeshift furniture shops located at Pragathi Nagar along the Bachupally–Miyapur road in Hyderabad late on Tuesday night. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported from the incident, as confirmed by fire department officials and local authorities.
Emergency Response and Firefighting Efforts
According to fire department officials, a distress call was received around 11 pm, prompting an immediate and large-scale response. Six fire tenders were swiftly pressed into service to combat the rapidly spreading flames. Additionally, five specialized teams from the Disaster Response Force of the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Fire Services Department (HYDRAA) rushed to the spot to assist in the complex firefighting operation.
A total of thirty-six firefighters battled the intense blaze for several hours before finally bringing the fire under control. Their efforts successfully prevented the flames from spreading to nearby residential and commercial buildings, averting a potentially much larger disaster. Fire tenders were deployed from multiple stations including Kukatpally and Jeedimetla as a precautionary measure to contain the situation.
Cause of the Fire and Damage Assessment
Preliminary investigations conducted by authorities suggest that the blaze was triggered by a short circuit. Kukatpally station house officer T Jagan Mohan provided details, stating, "A loose wire from an overhead electrical transformer is suspected to have fallen on one of the shops. The fire quickly spread to adjacent furniture units as the structures were temporary and stocked with highly combustible materials such as wood and foam."
Officials have estimated the financial losses from the fire at approximately Rs 50 lakh, though local traders claim the actual damage could be significantly higher. The fact that the incident occurred late at night proved fortunate, as no workers or shop owners were present inside the units at the time, preventing what could have been a major human tragedy.
Official Response and Safety Warnings
Later in the day, HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath visited the affected stretch on the Bachupally main road to assess the damage firsthand. He stated that compensation-related issues would be examined by the revenue department, which would conduct a thorough assessment of the losses and initiate appropriate action for affected traders.
Commissioner Ranganath issued an important warning about fire risks, noting that danger increases significantly during summer months due to higher electricity consumption and excessive load on transformers and electrical panels. He specifically highlighted that commercial establishments dealing with flammable materials, particularly wood and furniture businesses, face heightened vulnerability.
The commissioner urged traders and property owners to take preventive safety measures, including:
