Hyderabad's 15,000 Crore Infrastructure Push: Congress Government Charts Global City Vision

In a significant announcement, Telangana's Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu declared on Tuesday that the Congress government is firmly committed to transforming Hyderabad into a premier global destination. The administration has sanctioned a massive 15,000 crore worth of works within the Greater Hyderabad limits, focusing on critical civic infrastructure projects.

Major Infrastructure Projects and Funding Details

The sanctioned funds are earmarked for an extensive array of urban development initiatives, including the construction of new flyovers, road bridges, and elevated corridors. These projects aim to enhance connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion in the rapidly growing metropolitan area. Minister Babu emphasized that the government's approach is vision-driven, requiring meticulous planning and scientific traffic studies before execution.

Addressing the state assembly during the question hour, Sridhar Babu provided detailed clarifications in response to queries from BRS MLAs. The legislators, including KP Vivekanand, D Sudheer Reddy, Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Mutha Gopal, P Sabita Indrareddy, Madhavaram Krishna Rao, and Ch Malla Reddy, had raised concerns about the number of flyovers, underpasses, and link roads constructed by the Congress government over the past two and a half years, along with the associated expenditures.

Refuting Allegations of Stalled Development

The minister strongly refuted allegations from BRS members that the Congress government had stalled developmental works sanctioned under the previous BRS administration's Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP). He categorically denied claims that only 122 crore had been spent, asserting that the government has not halted ongoing projects.

"When BRS was in power, it initially planned for SRDP in 2014 and actual works began in 2016. We are also taking some time for planning, scientific traffic studies and execution," Sridhar Babu explained, drawing parallels to the previous government's timeline for project implementation.

Completion of Inherited Projects and Future Plans

Dismissing accusations of partisan attitudes, the minister highlighted that several projects inherited from the BRS regime were incomplete when Congress assumed power. Works at Shashtripuram, Shilpa Layout, and Aramghar are now being actively completed under the current administration. While acknowledging that one or two projects sanctioned with political motivations were cancelled, Babu emphasized the government's commitment to substantive development.

The minister also addressed specific challenges, including issues with contractors on projects like the Suchitra to Medchal flyover and Ghatkesar flyover. He revealed that the state government is engaging with central authorities to resolve these obstacles and ensure timely completion.

Future City Initiative and Decongestion Strategy

Looking ahead, Sridhar Babu announced that the state government has sanctioned 2,250 crore for various infrastructure works in the 2026-27 fiscal year, with assurances that these projects will be completed as planned. In response to suggestions from BRS MLA Sudheer Reddy, the government plans to develop a West to East corridor along the Musi River as part of a broader strategy to decongest the city's main roads.

The minister expressed concerns about potential chaos if high-rise buildings sanctioned by the previous government in western Hyderabad are completed without proper planning. He pointed to projects near Rajendra Nagar as examples where careful consideration is needed. To address these challenges, the government has proposed the Future City initiative, designed to decongest both the core city areas and western Hyderabad through strategic urban planning.

Addressing Environmental and Urban Challenges

With increasing migration to Hyderabad, Sridhar Babu stressed the urgent need for developing satellite townships and decongesting choked areas to ensure sustainable urban growth. Responding to Medchal MLA Ch Malla Reddy's questions about the Jawaharnagar dump yard and pollution issues, the minister disclosed that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed authorities to identify suitable dumping yard locations on at least three sides of the city to manage waste effectively.

The comprehensive infrastructure plan represents a holistic approach to urban development, balancing immediate transportation needs with long-term environmental sustainability and quality of life improvements for Hyderabad's residents.
