Indore Budget Session Disrupted Over Vande Mataram Controversy
Indore Budget Session Disrupted Over Vande Mataram Row

Indore Municipal Corporation Passes Rs 8,455 Crore Budget Amid Controversy

The Indore Municipal Corporation successfully passed its substantial budget of Rs 8,455 crore by a majority vote on Wednesday. However, the session was overshadowed by a significant disruption that brought proceedings to a temporary standstill.

Congress Corporator's Refusal Sparks Immediate Backlash

The controversy erupted when Congress corporator Fauzia Sheikh Aleem declined to sing the national song 'Vande Mataram' during the session. This refusal triggered an immediate and sharp reaction from BJP members present in the house.

BJP corporators quickly raised slogans near the Speaker's podium, creating a chaotic atmosphere that forced the session to halt for some time. The disruption was so intense that Speaker Munnalal Yadav was compelled to intervene to restore order.

Speaker's Intervention and Corporator's Exit

Following the intervention, Speaker Munnalal Yadav directed Fauzia Sheikh Aleem to leave the House. Before departing, the Congress corporator challenged the Speaker to provide legal justification for her removal.

"What act makes it mandatory?" she questioned, demanding to see the specific law that requires singing 'Vande Mataram'. She explained her position by citing religious principles, stating, "Our religion, Islam, does not permit us to sing 'Vande Mataram' in this manner. No one can force us to do so. The Constitution gives us this freedom."

Shortly after making these statements, Fauzia left the House voluntarily, though the directive from the Speaker had already been issued.

Congress Leadership Attempts Damage Control

Congress leader of opposition Chintu Choukse stepped in to defuse the tense situation. He emphasized that singing 'Vande Mataram' should be considered a matter of personal choice rather than a compulsory requirement.

However, Choukse was careful to balance this position by affirming the Congress party's commitment to respecting both the national anthem and the national song. He also confirmed that the state party president had been informed about the developments that unfolded during the budget session.

Budget Approval Overshadowed by Political Drama

Despite the controversy, the municipal corporation managed to pass its ambitious budget, which represents significant financial planning for Indore's development. The budget approval came through majority support, indicating broad agreement on the financial proposals.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions between political parties regarding cultural and religious expressions in official settings. It also raises questions about the balance between constitutional freedoms and expectations during formal government proceedings.

This episode in Indore's municipal governance demonstrates how symbolic acts can sometimes overshadow substantive policy matters, even during important budgetary discussions that directly affect city development and public services.
