In a decisive move to enforce urban safety standards, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has sealed the basements of two prominent coaching institutes in the city. This action follows inspections that uncovered serious violations of building safety and parking regulations, posing potential risks during emergencies such as waterlogging or fires.
Violations Discovered During Inspections
The IMC inspection team, operating under Zone 13 in Ward 74, identified significant breaches at two locations. At Scholars Academy Coaching Institute, officials found that the area originally sanctioned for vehicle parking had been illegally converted into a classroom. Tables and benches were arranged for students, directly contravening building permission laws and fire safety standards. As a result, the basement was immediately sealed to prevent further use.
Similarly, at Vidyapeeth Coaching, the inspection revealed that the designated parking space was being used as a large storeroom. This unauthorised change of use prompted IMC staff to seal the premises, emphasising the importance of adhering to approved building plans.
Administration's Stern Warning and Future Plans
Earlier this month, the collector had met with coaching operators and issued a clear warning: operating classrooms in basements—spaces meant for parking—would lead to immediate sealing and legal consequences. This proactive measure aims to prevent potential disasters and ensure public safety.
IMC Commissioner Kshitij Singhal stated, "Safety protocols and building norms are non-negotiable." He further warned that the drive against such violations will continue across Indore. Building owners found repurposing basements for purposes like classrooms, libraries, or storage will face harsh penalties, including fines and legal action.
