Residents of Indore continued to battle a persistent cold spell on Sunday, as the night temperature dipped to 8.4 degrees Celsius. This marks another day where the city's minimum temperature has stayed below the 9-degree mark, indicating a prolonged and intense winter phase across the region.
Detailed Weather Readings and Forecast
The day's maximum temperature was recorded at 27 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees below the normal average for this time of year. The morning began with a chilly 13 degrees Celsius at 8:30 AM, accompanied by hazy conditions that reduced visibility to nearly 2,500 metres. Light northeast winds blew at a speed close to 6 kilometres per hour. As the day progressed, the mercury climbed to 23.8 degrees Celsius by early evening.
Meteorologists attribute the conditions to a western disturbance active as a trough in the middle atmospheric layers. This weather system led to a moderate cloud cover over central parts of Madhya Pradesh. Satellite imagery confirmed that clouds stretched across the central belt throughout the day.
Recent Lows and Regional Weather Patterns
The current cold wave follows a particularly frigid night on Saturday, when Indore's temperature plummeted to a 10-year low of 6.2 degrees Celsius. Met scientist Arun Sharma provided insights into the broader state conditions, noting that western Madhya Pradesh experienced mostly steady weather in the past 24 hours. However, cold day conditions were observed at two stations in Shajapur and Betul districts.
Sharma added that while the Gwalior and Chambal regions are experiencing northwesterly winds, the southern districts of the state are under the influence of an easterly wind pattern.
Official Alerts and Public Advisory
The forecast for Madhya Pradesh predicts dry weather across the state for the next five days, with no rainfall expected in any district. Authorities have issued a yellow alert for cold wave and cold day conditions in Bhopal and Shajapur on Monday. No warnings are currently in place from December 9 to December 11.
Officials from the Bhopal Meteorological Centre have strongly urged residents to adhere to the issued winter safety guidelines. The public has been advised to take all necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families. Special care is recommended for elderly members and children during this ongoing period of severe cold.
