IUML General Council on June 20 to Decide on DMK Alliance Future

Chennai: Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) national president K M Kader Mohideen announced on Saturday that the party's general council would convene on June 20 to decide whether to remain in the DMK-led alliance. Speaking to reporters, Mohideen revealed that the DMK's reported willingness to support Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) for the chief minister's post had come as a shock, contributing to the delay in the IUML's decision to extend support to the DMK.

Shock Over DMK's Stance

Mohideen stated that the proposal to back EPS surprised the party. He noted that discussions about alternatives should have occurred only after Vijay had declared his inability to form the government. However, such talks reportedly took place beforehand, causing concern within the IUML.

Thirumavalavan's Name in the Fray

Mohideen also referenced discussions involving VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan. When questioned how Thirumavalavan could become chief minister without being an MLA, Mohideen was told that he could enter the assembly within six months. This further complicated the alliance dynamics.

Historical Ties with DMK

Despite the tensions, Mohideen acknowledged the deep-rooted relationship between IUML and DMK, stretching from the era of C N Annadurai through M Karunanidhi to M K Stalin. He admitted that moving away from the DMK would not be easy, given this long-standing ideological partnership. Notably, his party had been offered a ministerial berth by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

Voter Mood Shift Detected

Mohideen further claimed that IUML workers had sensed a shift in voter mood during campaigning in the Kolathur constituency, where DMK president M K Stalin lost. The party's women's wing, which conducted door-to-door campaigns, reported that women were speaking differently and questioned whether the DMK would receive the expected votes. This feedback was conveyed to the DMK leadership, though Mohideen said he was unaware of any subsequent action taken.

The IUML's general council meeting on June 20 will be crucial in determining the party's political future and its alliance with the DMK.
