IUML Faces Internal Rebellion Over Candidate Selection in Tirurangadi
Kozhikode: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is grappling with significant internal dissent following a public outburst by former Tanur MLA Abdurahiman Randathani against the party's decision to field PMA Sameer as its candidate for the Tirurangadi assembly constituency. This development has created substantial political ripples across the Malappuram district of Kerala.
Randathani's Vocal Opposition and Allegations
Randathani, who serves as the party's state secretary and is a prominent voice in television debates, expressed his discontent through a detailed Facebook post. He questioned the legitimacy of Sameer's candidature, alleging that the decision was made without proper consultation with party committees at the panchayat and municipal levels.
"This was executed without any demand from grassroots-level workers or local IUML committees, and deserving candidates were deliberately overlooked," Randathani stated emphatically. He further accused vested interests of driving the selection process, suggesting that "innocent Thangals were manipulated to serve specific agendas."
Drawing attention to Tirurangadi's rich political legacy—previously represented by stalwarts like A K Antony, Avukadar Kutty Naha Sahib, and U A Biran Sahib—Randathani argued that choosing Sameer, a relatively recent entrant to politics, raises serious questions about the party's direction. PMA Sameer, a company secretary by profession and former finance director of Chandrika, currently holds a position on IUML's state secretariat.
"When those who genuinely love the party question such decisions, it should not be misinterpreted as indiscipline. Party workers who dedicate themselves tirelessly have every right to express their heartfelt feelings," Randathani asserted, defending his public criticism.
LDF's Strategic Moves and Political Calculations
Sensing a strategic opportunity, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) leadership swiftly reached out to Randathani. The CPM district secretariat convened to explore ways to capitalize on the emerging dissent within IUML ranks. However, the political landscape is complicated by the fact that the Tirurangadi seat has already been allocated to LDF ally CPI, which has announced Ajith Koladi as its official candidate.
CPM is now awaiting formal confirmation from Randathani regarding his potential candidacy. There are strong indications that the LDF might consider shifting sports minister and current Tanur MLA V Abdurahiman to the Tirur constituency, as he has not yet commenced campaigning in Tanur despite his candidature being announced several days ago.
Randathani's Ambiguous Stance and CPM's Assessment
Addressing media representatives, Randathani remained ambiguous about whether he would contest with LDF backing but confirmed that LDF leaders had contacted him following his Facebook post. "I maintain cordial relations with local CPM leaders, and my expression was merely that of a concerned party worker," he clarified.
CPM politburo member A Vijayaraghavan, who attended the crucial district secretariat meeting, highlighted the significance of Randathani's dissent. "Randathani has consistently defended IUML during challenging periods, which makes his current opposition particularly noteworthy," Vijayaraghavan observed. He added that the LDF would thoroughly examine how the discontent within IUML over candidate selection could be leveraged to their advantage.
"A scenario appears to be unfolding where IUML may not remain entirely united. Should such fragmentation occur, we are prepared to respond positively and strategically," Vijayaraghavan concluded, signaling the LDF's readiness to exploit any internal weaknesses within the opposition.
