IUML Counters CPM's Jamaat-E-Islami Allegations as 'Desperate' Political Move
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Friday launched a strong rebuttal against CPM leader AK Balan's assertion that Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) was controlling the party's agenda and candidate selection. IUML state general secretary PMA Salam categorically dismissed the claim as a blatant lie motivated by the CPM's fear of an impending electoral defeat.
Baseless Claims Reflect CPM's Desperation, Says IUML Leader
"These are baseless allegations that will never stand. Making such baseless claims is typical of AK Balan and CPM, and it reflects their desperation in the face of a looming defeat," Salam stated emphatically. He further alleged that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was adhering to a strategy once outlined by EMS Namboodiripad—clinging to power even if it meant aligning with 'any devil'.
Salam accused the CM of being driven by a fear of legal consequences, suggesting, "The CM knows that if he is out of power, he will end up in prison, so that is why he is trying to cling to power at any cost."
IUML Cites LDF's Candidate History to Counter Allegations
In a pointed counterattack, Salam addressed the LDF's charges of IUML's alleged links with JEI by highlighting the LDF's own candidate in Vengara. He noted that despite the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) holding around 8,000 votes in the constituency, the LDF had not fielded a candidate from SDPI. Instead, they nominated an individual who had previously contested on an SDPI ticket.
"This is a constituency where SDPI has around 8,000 votes and yet they are not fielding a candidate. Instead, LDF has nominated a person who contested on an SDPI ticket in the previous election," Salam explained, adding that similar tactics were being employed to assist the BJP in seats like Palakkad. He further alleged that a tacit understanding between the CPM and BJP existed in 15 constituencies during the previous assembly election.
Vengara Candidate Challenges Balan to Criticize SDPI Openly
IUML leader and Vengara candidate KM Shaji weighed in, describing Balan as a blunt tool deployed by Vijayan to make reckless allegations and divert attention from critical issues. Shaji challenged Balan to openly criticize SDPI in Vengara, questioning the sincerity of the CPM's stance.
CITU Leader Claims JEI Pressure Denied Muneer Candidature
Meanwhile, CITU national general secretary Elamaram Kareem claimed that senior IUML leader M K Muneer was denied candidature due to pressure from Jamaat-e-Islami, citing Muneer's ideological opposition to the organization. This allegation added another layer to the ongoing political discourse.
Muneer Rejects Claims, Accuses CPM of Fabrication
Rejecting Kareem's claim, Muneer asserted that IUML does not decide candidates based on external influence. He accused the CPM of fabricating stories in the absence of favorable factors in the election, emphasizing the party's independence in its decision-making processes.
The exchange underscores the intense political rivalry in Kerala, with both parties leveraging allegations to gain electoral advantage as the state prepares for upcoming polls.
