Jaipur's Transport Nagar Bus Terminal Remains Incomplete, Poses Safety Risks
A full year after its official inauguration, the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation's Transport Nagar bus terminal on Agra Road continues to function without essential passenger amenities, exposing daily commuters to significant inconvenience and potential safety hazards around the clock.
Passengers Face Darkness and Uncertainty
Envisioned as a crucial transit hub for the region, the terminal currently offers little more than an open space filled with uncertainty for travelers. On April 7, commuter Rahul Yadav arrived at the facility around 5 a.m. to catch an early morning deluxe bus to Delhi, only to discover the premises engulfed in complete darkness.
The terminal lacked functioning lights, an operational enquiry office, a public announcement system, and any visible staff presence. Inside the facility, a solitary tea vendor appeared to serve as the only point of contact for confused and stranded passengers seeking information or assistance.
"Taking a late evening or early morning bus from this terminal is not at all safe," Yadav emphasized. "There is no security whatsoever. The state government is fortunate that no major incident has occurred in the past year. However, such an event could happen at any moment."
Poor Planning and Inadequate Facilities
A recent inspection during Wednesday afternoon revealed that the facility remains poorly planned in practical application and severely under-equipped. The sheds constructed specifically for the terminal stand largely unused, while buses were observed boarding passengers from a makeshift corner near the exit gate and tea stall, where no proper shelter exists.
Seating arrangements prove woefully inadequate for passenger volumes, and even basic cooling systems remain conspicuously absent from the premises. "Forget about an air conditioning system; the entire shaded areas are not even covered by functional fans," one frustrated commuter reported.
Official Explanations and Bureaucratic Delays
Transport officials have attributed the persistent delay in improving terminal facilities to a broader, comprehensive transport infrastructure plan currently under development. RSRTC representatives explained that the state budget proposal includes developing four satellite bus stands across Jaipur and redeveloping the existing Sindhi Camp into a modern multi-modal transportation terminal.
Following this announcement, the Rajasthan State Bus Terminal Development Corporation requested that RSRTC prepare a detailed project report for review and implementation. A senior RSRTC official disclosed that the corporation appointed RITES to prepare the necessary documentation, but RBRTDC has failed to respond for over eighteen months.
"According to the RITES report, the satellite terminal on Agra Road may be developed on the current plot or potentially relocated to Bagrana," the official stated. "Until we receive definitive clarity on these plans, RSRTC is not prepared to allocate funds toward improving the present facility."
The ongoing situation leaves thousands of daily passengers navigating an incomplete transportation hub that falls far short of basic safety and comfort standards, highlighting significant gaps between infrastructure planning and practical implementation in Jaipur's public transport system.
