JBVNL Fortifies Ranchi's Electrical Network for Seasonal Demands
The Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Ltd (JBVNL) has launched an extensive initiative to minimize power disruptions in Ranchi as the summer season approaches. The state capital's electricity distribution network is undergoing significant reinforcement through a series of targeted measures aimed at enhancing reliability and safety.
Proactive Infrastructure Upgrades Underway
From converting exposed overhead wires into insulated aerial bunched cables (ABCs) to installing and augmenting transformers, JBVNL is executing multiple projects at an accelerated pace. The company's general manager for Ranchi, Manmohan Kumar, emphasized the critical need for early preparedness. "Electricity demand rises significantly during summer, and early preparedness is essential for uninterrupted supply," Kumar stated in an interview. He further explained that the extended monsoon last year caused considerable damage to power infrastructure, making these preventive measures vital for both summer and upcoming monsoon seasons.
Transformer Installation and ABC Deployment
As part of the infrastructure overhaul, JBVNL is augmenting existing transformers and installing new units across the district. A total of 327 transformers have been installed specifically on Ranchi's Ring Road, with an additional 500 transformers deployed throughout the district. The transition to aerial bunched cables represents a major safety and efficiency improvement. These insulated conductors reduce risks from tree falls, bird contact, and phase clashes while withstanding harsh weather conditions.
The insulation minimizes leakage currents, thereby lowering transmission losses and improving overall system efficiency. The bundled configuration also makes illegal tapping more difficult, helping curb power theft and associated financial losses. "Our target is to convert all exposed wires in the city into aerial bunched cables in the next 6 months," Kumar revealed. "A total of 963.66 kilometers of exposed wires has already been replaced with ABCs in Ranchi alone."
Comprehensive Network Reinforcement
Beyond transformer and cable upgrades, JBVNL has initiated damage repair and line-strengthening work on all 11,000 kV lines, along with maintenance of 33,000 kV cable circuits. Officials are implementing strategies to ensure overhead lines remain operational even in areas with underground cables, allowing for quick supply shifts to overhead systems in case of underground faults.
Additional measures include:
- Enabling faster cable-to-cable interchangeability at substations and grid points to ensure immediate switching during line failures and prevent prolonged outages
- Installing mid-span poles to support wires weakened during the previous monsoon
- Trimming tree branches near overhead lines to prevent damage during heavy rainfall and strong winds in the coming monsoon season
These comprehensive efforts demonstrate JBVNL's commitment to providing Ranchi residents with a more resilient and reliable power supply system capable of handling seasonal challenges.
