Jharkhand Assembly Erupts in Protest Over LPG Cylinder Shortages and Price Hikes
Ranchi witnessed dramatic political scenes on Friday as ruling alliance MLAs staged vigorous protests both inside and outside the Jharkhand legislative assembly. The demonstrations centered on allegations of severe shortages of LPG gas cylinders coupled with significant price increases that have burdened households across the state.
Ministers Stage Symbolic Rickshaw Protest
The protest took a theatrical turn when Health Minister Irfan Ansari arrived at the assembly premises drawing a traditional rickshaw. Seated in the rickshaw was another minister, Shilpi Neha Tirkey, who held a prominent protest poster highlighting the LPG crisis. This symbolic gesture was designed to emphasize how ordinary citizens are struggling with basic fuel accessibility.
As assembly proceedings commenced, ruling party MLAs stood on their seats and raised loud slogans against the central government. The atmosphere grew tense as MLA Pradeep Yadav cited newspaper reports confirming gas shortages. "There is a genuine shortage of cooking gas affecting households across Jharkhand," Yadav declared. "This crisis has even impacted midday meal programs for students, creating additional hardships for families."
Opposition Counters Claims of Shortage
Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi strongly countered the allegations, asserting that no actual gas shortage exists within the state. "Ministers are deliberately creating anarchy and disorder over a manufactured situation," Marandi stated. He criticized what he called contradictory behavior, noting that while Congress members avoid parliamentary debates at the national level, their state counterparts disrupt assembly proceedings.
Marandi further claimed that India maintains sufficient fuel reserves to meet national requirements for approximately one month. Supporting this position, MLA Saryu Roy pointed out that it was the state government itself that had previously asserted no gas shortage existed.
Assembly Speaker Attempts to Restore Order
Amid the heated exchanges, Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato intervened, requesting that the contentious issue be temporarily set aside to allow scheduled House business to proceed. However, the protests had already gained momentum earlier in the day when ruling party MLAs organized a dharna (sit-in protest) in front of the assembly building.
The demonstrators displayed numerous posters and banners with provocative slogans, including one that read: "Sansad se Narendra gayab and desh se cylinder gayab" (Narendra is absent from Parliament and cylinders are absent from the country).
Ministers Highlight Broader Economic Concerns
Agriculture Minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey expressed deep concern about the impact on ordinary citizens. "The common people bear the heaviest burden from these fuel price hikes," she emphasized. "If this situation continues unchecked, it will have grave consequences for our national economy."
Health Minister Irfan Ansari vowed to continue his protest against inflation, signaling that the political confrontation over fuel accessibility and pricing is likely to persist. The day's events highlighted growing tensions between state and central governments over essential commodity management and economic policies affecting daily life.
