Goa Nightclub Fire: Jharkhand Orders Statewide Safety Audit of Pubs, Restaurants
Jharkhand safety audit after Goa fire tragedy

In a swift response to the devastating nightclub fire in Goa that killed at least 25 people and injured many on Saturday, the Jharkhand government has announced a comprehensive safety inspection of all entertainment venues across the state. The move aims to prevent a similar tragedy, especially with the Christmas and New Year festivities just around the corner.

Minister Issues Strict Directives for Immediate Action

State Disaster Management Minister Irfan Ansari on Sunday issued urgent instructions to officials. He mandated immediate fire safety and structural safety checks of all bars, restaurants, and hotels operating on rooftops and terraces. Ansari directed all district administrations to submit a detailed inspection report to the state government within a week.

The minister stated he would convene a meeting with departmental officials on Monday to formulate preventive measures. "After the meeting, a detailed safety campaign of all such joints across the state will be carried out. Any place found not complying with the rules will be sealed," Ansari told TOI.

Compensation Demanded and State-Level Aid Promised

Expressing his concern over the loss of lives from Jharkhand in the Goa incident, Ansari offered condolences to the bereaved families. He attributed the tragedy to a governmental lapse. "The Goa govt should ensure that such an incident does not happen again since that is a place which attracts a lot of tourists, including foreign nationals," he said.

The minister made a significant appeal to the central government, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide compensation of at least Rs 1 crore to the family of each deceased. For the three victims from Jharkhand, Ansari pledged to meet Chief Minister Hemant Soren to seek financial assistance for their families at the state level.

Fire Department Intensifies Pre-Festive Checks

Jharkhand's fire department has confirmed it is ramping up its vigilance. Jitendra Tiwari, the assistant state fire officer (in-charge), informed that the department consistently monitors institutional buildings and party zones. Their checks focus on:

  • Availability and adequacy of fire exits.
  • Possession of required Fire No Objection Certificates (NOCs).
  • Access to water sources for firefighting.

"In Ranchi, almost all such properties have complied with the rules. We will further intensify the checking as Christmas and New Year celebrations are coming up," Tiwari added, emphasizing the proactive steps being taken to ensure public safety during the upcoming holiday season.
