Farmers' Agitation in Jind Escalates with Daily Effigy Burnings
The protest by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) against the new crop procurement rules in Jind has entered its ninth consecutive day on Thursday, with farmers intensifying their agitation by burning effigies of BJP ministers and MLAs daily. The farmers are demanding an immediate rollback of the biometric procurement system, which they argue is burdensome and unfair to agricultural communities.
Escalation of Protest Tactics
In a significant escalation, the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Tikait) has announced that they will burn effigies of BJP ministers and MLAs every day until their demands are met. On Thursday, an effigy of Haryana deputy speaker Krishan Lal Midda, who is also an MLA from the Jind assembly constituency, was set ablaze to press their demands. This action follows statements made on Wednesday by BKU district president Bindar Numberdar, state vice president Umed Singh Redhu, and spokesperson Ramraji Dhull, who expressed their anger and vowed to continue burning effigies until the government withdraws what they termed as a 'tuglaki garman' or oppressive order.
Demands and Warnings from Farmers
The BKU has firmly demanded that the government roll back the new crop procurement rules immediately. They have warned that if the rules are not withdrawn soon, a major decision will be taken at the ongoing protest at the market committee office on April 19. This protest has drawn attention to the broader issues faced by farmers in Haryana, highlighting tensions over agricultural policies and governance.
The farmers' agitation underscores growing discontent with the biometric system, which they claim complicates the procurement process and adds unnecessary hurdles. The daily effigy burnings symbolize their frustration and determination to push for policy changes, with the protest showing no signs of abating as it continues to gain momentum in Jind.
