Major Confrontation Erupts in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Over Iran Conflict
A significant confrontation unfolded in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Friday as National Conference (NC) legislators staged a vehement protest against the killing of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and the ongoing military actions by the United States and Israel in Iran. The dramatic scenes highlighted deep political divisions and international solidarity within the state's legislative body.
Protest and Clashes Inside the Assembly
Video footage from the Assembly captured NC MLAs chanting slogans and holding portraits of Ayatollah Khamenei inside the House, creating a charged atmosphere. As tensions escalated, police personnel were called in to restore order. The protest was met with counter-protests from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs, leading to a physical scuffle between Congress MLA Irfan Hafiz Lone and BJP MLA Yudvir Sethi. In response to the escalating situation, Assembly proceedings were briefly adjourned to allow tempers to cool and restore decorum.
National Conference Leaders Express Solidarity with Iran
The protest was spearheaded by National Conference leaders who expressed unwavering solidarity with Iran. Party MLA Tanvir Sadiq articulated the stance, stating, "We are standing in solidarity with Iran. The entire National Conference and the government of Jammu and Kashmir are standing with them. No country has the right to attack another, and India's top leadership should condemn this." Sadiq emphasized that the party supports the people of Iran in the wake of Khamenei's killing, framing it as a matter of international justice and sovereignty.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Condemns Conflict and Regime Change
Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the ongoing conflict in West Asia, asserting that regime change cannot be achieved through military bombardment. He stated, "The only people who get to choose their regime are the citizens of that country. Regime change cannot be effected by aerial bombardment." Abdullah characterized Khamenei's killing as a "gross misuse of force and violation of international law," reflecting broader concerns about the implications of foreign military interventions.
Background of Regional Tensions
Tensions in the region have intensified following joint US-Israel military strikes on Iran on February 28, which resulted in the death of Ayatollah Khamenei and several senior leaders of the Islamic Republic. In retaliation, Iran launched strikes against US bases in Gulf countries and Israel, exacerbating the conflict. This geopolitical turmoil has sparked global debates and local reactions, as evidenced by the protests in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.
The incident underscores how international conflicts can resonate within domestic political arenas, influencing legislative proceedings and public discourse in regions like Jammu and Kashmir. The Assembly's adjournment and the clashes between MLAs highlight the deep-seated emotions and political alignments tied to global events, raising questions about India's foreign policy stance and regional stability.
