Jonai Assembly Constituency Gears Up for Direct BJP-Congress Clash
The Scheduled Tribe-reserved Jonai assembly constituency in Assam's Dhemaji district is poised for a head-to-head battle between incumbent BJP MLA Bhubon Pegu, aged 55, and Congress first-time candidate Raju Kumar Medok, also 55, with no other contenders in the race. This contest pits one of Assam's most electorally dominant sitting legislators against a novice assembly hopeful in a constituency where the Mising community holds significant political sway. Notably, both candidates hail from the same tribal background, setting the stage for a community-focused electoral duel.
Bhubon Pegu's Formidable Electoral Track Record
Pegu enters the election with an impressive history in Jonai, having secured the seat three times under varying political affiliations. In 2006, running as an Independent, he defeated then Congress MLA Pradan Baruah by a margin of 14,868 votes, garnering 79,117 votes compared to Baruah's 64,249. He faced a setback in 2011, losing to Baruah by the same margin of 14,868 votes. However, he bounced back in 2016, again as an Independent, triumphing over BJP's Aswini Pait with a substantial lead of 39,148 votes, polling 88,441 votes. His most decisive victory came in 2021, contesting on a BJP ticket, where he defeated Congress candidate Hema Hari Prasanna Pegu by a staggering 1,10,987 votes, securing 1,68,411 votes against 57,424, while AJP candidate Phaniram Tayeng finished third with 7,726 votes.
That 2021 win, exceeding one lakh votes, stands as one of the most emphatic constituency-level triumphs in recent Assam elections. Reflecting on his journey, Pegu stated, "Jonai has given me everything. Winning three mandates across different elections, twice as Independent and once from BJP — that is the trust of my people. I have worked to honour that trust every single day, and I will continue to do so."
Congress Bets on Fresh Face Raju Medok
The Congress party has fielded Raju Medok, who lacks prior assembly election experience. The strategy appears to leverage his Mising identity, coupled with potential anti-incumbency sentiments and voter fatigue from Pegu's prolonged dominance, to inject competitiveness into the race. Nevertheless, overcoming a margin of over one lakh votes presents a formidable challenge. Medok emphasized, "The people of Jonai need a fresh voice. Floods and erosion have devastated this constituency year after year. It is time to ask whether the same leadership has delivered the protection this region deserves."
Key Issues: Flooding and Erosion in Jonai
Flooding and erosion caused by the Brahmaputra and Lali rivers remain the defining concerns in Jonai. Over the years, extensive land areas have been lost to erosion, while annual floods persistently displace communities across the constituency. These environmental challenges are central to the electoral discourse, with both candidates expected to address mitigation and relief measures.
Historical Electoral Trends in Jonai
Jonai has witnessed varied electoral outcomes historically. In the ten assembly elections since 1978, Congress has emerged victorious four times, the AGP and Independents have won twice each, and the BJP and Janata Party have secured one win each. Pegu accounts for two of the Independent victories, underscoring his personal appeal beyond party lines.
As voting approaches, the pivotal question in Jonai is whether Medok can substantially erode Pegu's entrenched personal vote base in a constituency where the BJP MLA has consistently demonstrated an ability to transcend party affiliations and secure wins based on individual merit.
