Chennai: From his early days as a leader of the Kullapalayam Panchayat in Coimbatore during the 1970s, K A Sengottaiyan has built a remarkable political career spanning over five decades in Tamil Nadu. His journey from a grassroots party worker to a 10-time legislator underscores his enduring influence and longevity in the state's politics.
Early Political Rise
Born in 1948, Sengottaiyan began his political ascent at the age of 29. His dedicated grassroots work helped him secure his first Assembly election victory from the Sathyamangalam constituency in 1977. This was the same year the AIADMK came to power under its iconic founder, M G Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR.
Loyalty to Jayalalithaa and Ministerial Roles
Following MGR's death, Sengottaiyan became a steadfast supporter of J Jayalalithaa. During various AIADMK governments, he held several important portfolios, including the Revenue Department. His political acumen and loyalty ensured his continued relevance within the party.
Role Under Edappadi K Palaniswami
Sengottaiyan wielded significant influence during the administration of Edappadi K Palaniswami, serving as the School Education Minister. During his tenure, he was credited with introducing several ambitious reforms in the education sector, aiming to improve the quality of schooling in the state.
Expulsion from AIADMK and Joining TVK
In November 2025, Sengottaiyan was expelled from the AIADMK following a series of public disagreements with Palaniswami. Soon after, he joined the Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), where his vast political experience became a key asset to the party. His move was seen as a major boost for the fledgling party.
Recent Electoral Success
In the April 23 Assembly elections, Sengottaiyan defeated DMK candidate N Nallasivam by a margin of 16,620 votes, securing 82,612 votes. This victory marked his 10th term as a legislator, further cementing his legacy in Tamil Nadu politics.
