The merger of former MLA Bachchu Kadu's Prahar Janshakti Party with the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is being interpreted as a calculated political arrangement that serves the interests of both parties. This move aligns with Shinde's broader strategy to strengthen the Shiv Sena's footprint in the Vidarbha region, which has traditionally been a stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Strategic Benefits for Both Sides
Kadu, who lost the 2024 assembly elections, gains political relevance through this merger. He is expected to secure a seat in the Legislative Council, ensuring his continued presence in state politics. For Shinde, Kadu brings a known face with an established mass base, which could help the Shiv Sena break into the BJP bastion of Vidarbha.
Although the Shiv Sena has MLAs and even a Member of Parliament from Vidarbha, it has historically played a secondary role to its ally BJP. Even the undivided Shiv Sena had attempted to expand in the region but with limited success. Sources indicate that Shinde is feeling pressure from the BJP, prompting a concerted effort to protect its existing strongholds and venture into areas traditionally dominated by the BJP.
Party Spokesperson Clarifies Stance
Shiv Sena chief spokesperson Raju Waghmere stated that the expansion should not be viewed as a move against the BJP. "Every party has the right to expand, and it would be wrong to ignore those who approach us," Waghmere said. He added that under Shinde's leadership, many people want to work with the party. Regarding Kadu, Waghmere noted that Kadu had openly supported Shinde after his revolt in 2022, so the merger is not a result of compulsion but a continuation of past alignment.
Kadu's Entry and Political Rivalries
Kadu's merger coincided with Shiv Sena MP Pratap Jadhav taking charge as the party's sampark mantri for Vidarbha. A day before Kadu's entry, Jadhav held a crucial meeting in Nagpur with party officials to discuss expansion plans. Kadu's entry has drawn particular attention due to his public rivalry with former Amravati MP and BJP leader Naveent Rana and her MLA husband Ravi.
Waghmere downplayed the rivalry, saying, "Such differences of opinion happen within parties as well, so it is never a deal breaker. There are many like Kadu who may not wish to join the BJP, and if we reject them, they will go to the opposition. At least within the Mahayuti alliance, we become stronger. That is how we must look at things."
Broader Implications for the Mahayuti Alliance
The merger is seen as a move to consolidate the Mahayuti alliance, which includes the Shiv Sena, BJP, and other allies. By bringing Kadu into the fold, the alliance gains a new resource to challenge the opposition in Vidarbha. The development also underscores Shinde's ambition to assert the Shiv Sena's independent identity within the alliance while expanding its electoral base.
