Auto Drivers Stage Protest in Kalaburagi Over Sudden LPG Price Increase

Hundreds of auto drivers in Kalaburagi gathered at SVP Circle on Sunday to protest against a sudden and sharp increase in the price of LPG gas used for autorickshaws. The demonstration saw owners and drivers of LPG-powered auto rickshaws expressing their outrage, labeling the price hike as a heavy burden on the already struggling poor auto drivers.

Drivers Allege Unfair Pricing Practices

The protesters alleged that over the past three days, some suppliers have increased LPG rates from Rs 60 per litre to Rs 90 per litre. They highlighted that with the high number of autos in the city, drivers are not earning adequate income, making this price increase a significant blow to their livelihoods.

"Despite driving the autorickshaw all day, the money earned is not enough for their daily needs. Increasing the price is condemnable," the drivers stated during the protest.

Demands for Immediate Action

The auto drivers pointed out that while there has been no increase in the prices of petrol, diesel, and domestic cylinders, only the price of auto LPG has been raised. They called this a deliberate move, accusing gas agencies of charging auto drivers unfairly.

"Immediate action should be taken against them," they demanded, urging authorities to intervene and address the issue promptly.

Threat of Bandh if Demands Are Not Met

In addition to calling for action against the suppliers, the protesters sought assurances that the price of LPG would not be increased for any reason in the coming days. They warned that if their demands are not met, they will call for a bandh (shutdown) in Kalaburagi, escalating their protest to disrupt normal life in the city.

The protest underscores the growing frustration among auto drivers who rely on LPG as a cost-effective fuel option, now facing financial strain due to the unexpected price surge.
