Prakash Karat Calls for LDF to Resist Centre's Hostility, Lead Kerala's Progress
In a significant political address, CPM politburo member and former general secretary Prakash Karat emphasized the crucial role of Kerala's Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in resisting what he described as hostile interventions from the Union government. Speaking at a 'meet the leader' program in Kochi on Thursday, Karat outlined a vision where the LDF must continue its assertive stance to safeguard and advance Kerala's development trajectory.
Communal Harmony: Kerala's Distinct Achievement
Karat presented a striking contrast between Kerala's record and that of Congress-ruled states on communal harmony. "There have been no communal riots in Kerala over the past decade," he declared, highlighting this as a testament to the state's political environment. In sharp comparison, he cited statistics presented by the Karnataka home minister in the legislative assembly indicating 70 communal riots in Karnataka during just the last two years.
"Despite Congress claiming to be a secular party, they compromise with communalism wherever they are in power," Karat asserted, suggesting this pattern reveals a fundamental contradiction in the party's professed values versus its governance record.
Economic Challenges and Government Response
The veteran leader addressed pressing economic concerns that threaten ordinary citizens. "Beyond the LPG shortage, inflation and rising prices will severely impact the economy," he warned, noting that the ongoing Middle East conflict will exacerbate these challenges in coming days. Karat predicted that the economic consequences would persist long after the war concludes.
However, he expressed confidence in the LDF government's capacity to manage such crises effectively. "In such a situation, only the LDF government will be able to effectively address it," he stated, pointing to the administration's performance during the COVID-19 pandemic as evidence. "The LDF government effectively managed similar situations during crises, including COVID-19, by strengthening public distribution and making additional interventions during critical times to protect the common people."
Confronting Central Government Interventions
Karat anticipated continued challenges from the Union government, describing a pattern of neglect and hostile interventions toward Kerala. He emphasized the LDF's historical approach to such confrontations. "LDF governments have a history of strongly resisting such interventions," he noted, adding that "Kerala was the first to legally challenge the central government's wrong moves" and has filed the most such petitions in the Supreme Court.
National Context and Kerala's Exceptionalism
The CPM leader placed Kerala's situation within the broader national political landscape. He argued that "the 12 years of Modi's rule have led to communal polarisation across the country," with attacks on religious minorities becoming daily occurrences. Yet, Karat maintained that "Kerala has remained different from this over the past 10 years," presenting the state as an exception to this troubling national trend.
Karat's address served as both a defense of the LDF government's record and a call to action for continued resistance against central government policies he views as detrimental to Kerala's interests and values.
