Bhagyalakshmi operates a dojo from her residence near Hospital Road, where she trains hundreds of students in karate. The young candidate believes that the discipline, focus, and patience she has cultivated through years of martial arts training will significantly enhance her ability to serve the ward effectively.
Her decision to enter politics stems from growing frustration with what she describes as the apathy of previous councillors toward pressing local issues. As a final year LLB student at Sree Narayana Law College in Poothotta, Bhagyalakshmi feels equipped to fight for citizens' rights through legal channels while bringing fresh energy to local governance.
Addressing Long-Neglected Civic Issues
The aspiring politician has identified several critical problems that have plagued the Ernakulam Central division for years. The anganwadi in the division remains in pathetic condition, operating without a permanent building despite repeated complaints from residents.
"Compared to many other divisions, several projects have not taken shape here," Bhagyalakshmi stated, highlighting the disparity in development initiatives. While the corporation has launched wellness centers and open gyms in other areas, these facilities have completely bypassed her ward.
Another persistent issue she aims to tackle is illegal waste dumping, particularly in Pullepady area. "Residents have been complaining about this for years but it was not addressed. This has led to littered streets and growing frustration," she explained, emphasizing the environmental and health concerns affecting the community.
Martial Arts Meets Public Service
Bhagyalakshmi sees strong parallels between her martial arts background and effective public service. "The law degree will help me fight for people's rights. Martial arts has taught me discipline and enables me to listen patiently to people's issues," she remarked, though acknowledging that entering the election fray will be her toughest bout yet.
The young candidate draws confidence from the overwhelming support she has received from local residents and her students, many of whom have expressed encouragement regardless of political affiliations. This grassroots backing has strengthened her resolve to challenge the BJP's hold on the seat and bring about tangible change in the division.
