Farmers in Karnataka have threatened to stage a mega protest at Jewargi on June 9, demanding transparency in the implementation of the Mallabad Lift Irrigation Project. The second phase of the project is currently underway, but farmers allege a lack of clarity and accountability in its execution.
Raitha Horata Samiti Leads Demand
Mahesh Kumar Rathod, a leader of the Raitha Horata Samiti, has been at the forefront of the agitation. He stated that the farmers are not opposed to the project but want complete transparency in how the work is being carried out. "We have been demanding clear information about the project's progress and fund utilization. Without transparency, the project may not benefit the intended beneficiaries," Rathod said.
Project Background
The Mallabad Lift Irrigation Project is designed to provide irrigation facilities to drought-prone areas in the region. The first phase was completed earlier, but farmers claim that the benefits did not reach all. With the second phase underway, they want assurances that the work will be done fairly and efficiently.
The protest is scheduled for June 9 at Jewargi, and farmers from surrounding areas are expected to participate in large numbers. The Raitha Horata Samiti has called on the state government to address their concerns before the protest date.
Local authorities have been alerted about the planned protest, and security arrangements are being reviewed. The district administration is likely to hold talks with farmer leaders to avert the protest.
