Karnataka Government and Raj Bhavan Clash Over RSS Ideologue Event at University

A conclave commemorating 60 years of lectures by RSS ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) campus in Mysuru has erupted into a significant confrontation between the Karnataka government and Raj Bhavan. The event, titled ‘Ekatma Manav Darshan: Bharat's Worldview', is being held at the KSOU convocation hall in Muktagangotri, sparking intense political and administrative tensions.

Government Cancellation and University Defiance

On Tuesday, the Karnataka state government announced the cancellation of the three-day conference, asserting that the private event's objectives were incompatible with the university's goals and government protocols. However, in a bold act of defiance, KSOU proceeded with the conference as scheduled. Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot attended the session on Wednesday, which was inaugurated by Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan via video conference, highlighting the direct involvement of high-ranking officials in the dispute.

Vice-Chancellor Sharanappa V Halase presided over the inaugural day's proceedings, though several senior KSOU functionaries were notably absent. Organizers of the conference claimed they had challenged the government's cancellation order in the high court and secured interim relief. According to their statement, petitioners including Preetesh Jain of NGO Parivartan, Dr Punith Raj of Prajna Pravah, and Madan Gopal of the Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation filed a petition, leading Justice Sachin Shankar Magadum to stay the government order and instruct authorities not to interfere with the conference. However, this claim of court relief has not been independently verified by external sources.

Controversy Over University Association

Despite earlier informing the government that it had no formal association with the event, attendees reported that KSOU had permitted organizers to use its name and logo in publicity materials for the conference. This discrepancy has fueled accusations of procedural violations and raised questions about the university's stance in the face of government directives.

Political and Philosophical Dimensions

During the conference, Vice-President Radhakrishnan emphasized the relevance of Upadhyaya's philosophy, stating, "The vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047 embodies the ideals of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya's Ekatma Manav Darshan, which offers a path to harmony through ‘dharma'." Governor Gehlot praised ‘Ekatma Manav Darshan' as "not merely a philosophical concept, but the very foundation of India's culture, thought and way of life," describing Upadhyaya as a visionary thinker whose ideas remain pertinent today.

Suttur Mutt seer Shivaratri Deshikendra Swami highlighted Upadhyaya's commitment to national consciousness and social service despite early hardships. Meanwhile, state BJP president B Y Vijayendra accused the Congress government of engaging in hate politics and political interference in an academic event. He asserted, "They are even obstructing an event being held at a university. Such political interference in education isn't good. This government has brought a Bill against hate speech, but action must be taken against the government [for promoting hate]."

Broader Implications and Ongoing Tensions

This incident underscores deeper political rifts in Karnataka, with the event serving as a flashpoint for debates over academic freedom, government authority, and ideological expression. The faceoff between the state government and Raj Bhavan reflects broader national tensions surrounding the role of RSS-affiliated activities in educational institutions. As the conference continues, stakeholders are closely monitoring developments, which could have lasting impacts on university governance and political dynamics in the region.

The controversy also raises questions about the enforcement of government orders and the independence of educational bodies. With both sides standing firm, the situation remains volatile, potentially leading to further legal and administrative actions. This event highlights the intricate balance between political ideologies and institutional autonomy in India's educational landscape.
