A violent clash broke out among Karnataka Youth Congress workers at the party office on Monday, stemming from a deepening factional feud within the organization. The altercation, which involved physical scuffles and heated exchanges, highlighted the internal strife that has been simmering for weeks.
Root cause of the conflict
The bone of contention was a decision by Karnataka Youth Congress president HS Manjunatha to keep on hold the positions of over a dozen office-bearers. Citing inactive participation in organizational activities, Manjunatha had suspended these leaders, triggering resentment among their supporters. The affected office-bearers and their factions accused the president of acting unilaterally and favoring his own loyalists.
Clash at the party office
On Monday afternoon, workers from both factions gathered at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) office in Bengaluru to press their demands. What began as a verbal argument soon escalated into a physical confrontation, with party workers pushing and shoving each other. Some workers were seen throwing chairs and water bottles, prompting other staff members to intervene and separate the warring groups.
Security personnel present at the office had to step in to restore order. No injuries were reported, but the incident has embarrassed the party leadership, which has been trying to project unity ahead of upcoming local body elections.
Reactions from party leaders
Senior Congress leaders in Karnataka expressed concern over the incident. KPCC working president Satish Jarkiholi condemned the violence and called for discipline within the party ranks. He urged both factions to resolve their differences through dialogue rather than confrontation. Meanwhile, Youth Congress president HS Manjunatha defended his decision, stating that it was necessary to ensure active participation and accountability among office-bearers. He also promised to review the suspensions after discussing with senior leaders.
Background of the feud
The Karnataka Youth Congress has been plagued by factionalism for several months, with rival groups backing different leaders for key positions. The current dispute is seen as an extension of the larger power struggle within the state Congress unit, which has often witnessed infighting between various camps. The party's national leadership has been urged to intervene and broker peace before the situation spirals further out of control.
This incident comes at a time when the Congress party is gearing up for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) elections, where it hopes to make significant gains. The internal discord, however, threatens to undermine its campaign efforts and provide ammunition to rival parties, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (Secular).
Way forward
Political analysts believe that the Congress high command must act swiftly to address the factional feud in the Youth Congress. Failure to do so could lead to further erosion of the party's grassroots support, especially among the youth. The party has scheduled a meeting of senior leaders later this week to discuss the issue and find a lasting solution. Until then, the Karnataka Youth Congress remains a house divided, with tensions simmering beneath the surface.
