Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan Predicts Resounding LDF Victory Citing Secularism and Development

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has declared that he anticipates a resounding mandate for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the upcoming elections. He emphasized that the current government has served as a reliable shield, protecting both the secular fabric and the developmental momentum of the state.

Campaign Progress and Expectations

When questioned about the campaign's progression, Vijayan stated that it has advanced remarkably well, with highly encouraging energy on the ground. He noted that the people of Kerala are politically astute and evaluate a government based on its resilience during crises and its long-term vision. The Chief Minister expressed firm belief that the electorate clearly recognizes this government's role in safeguarding Kerala's secular identity and driving development.

Communicating Government Initiatives

Regarding the communication of the government's initiatives during the campaign, Vijayan asserted that the LDF believes in presenting facts and a clear progress report rather than mere rhetoric. He highlighted accountability as the hallmark of the LDF, with the party approaching the public with concrete achievements. These include:

  • Construction of over 5 lakh homes through the LIFE Mission.
  • Elevation of public schools and hospitals to global standards.
  • Successful implementation of a microplan to eradicate extreme poverty.

Simultaneously, Vijayan pointed out that the government has broken the myth that major development projects cannot be realized in Kerala. Key accomplishments cited are:

  1. Realization of the Vizhinjam International Seaport.
  2. Rapid execution of National Highway 66 widening.
  3. Completion of the GAIL pipeline.
  4. Launch of the Kochi Water Metro and K-FON network.

He described these as testaments to the government's unyielding political will, contrasting the LDF's politics of tangible development with the opposition's politics of disruption.

Addressing Party Defections and Ideological Allegations

On the issue of several CPM leaders switching to rival camps close to elections, Vijayan dismissed suggestions of external intervention, stating that the CPM is bound by ideology, not by the lure of power or personal wealth. He contrasted this with the exodus of leaders from other parties to the BJP, often driven by opportunism or fear of central investigative agencies. Vijayan suggested that if individuals with weak convictions leave the Left, it acts as a process of self-purification for the party.

Responding to allegations that the CPM is becoming a 'rightist' party abandoning core Marxist values, Vijayan labeled this a deliberate mischaracterization. He defined right-wing economic policy by privatisation of public assets, withdrawal of state from education and healthcare, and slashing of welfare, asserting that the LDF is doing the exact opposite. Examples provided include:

  • Purchasing and reviving Hindustan Newsprint Ltd as Kerala Paper Products Ltd.
  • Declaring internet a basic human right and building the K-FON network.
  • Distributing Rs 2,000 as monthly welfare pension to 62 lakh people.

Vijayan explained that inviting investment to build a modern knowledge economy and create jobs for youth is the practical application of principles to generate wealth for equitable distribution.

Basis for Confidence in Third Consecutive Term

When asked about the basis for confidence in securing a third consecutive term, Vijayan rooted it in the LDF's vision and unwavering commitment. He highlighted the successful merger of world-class social welfare with massive infrastructure development, noting that Kerala consistently ranks first in NITI Aayog's Sustainable Development Goals index and health indices. According to Vijayan, people trust the LDF because it has proven its ability to deliver on promises.

Analysis of Local Body Election Results

Addressing interpretations of recent local body election results as reflecting anti-incumbency sentiment, Vijayan called it a fallacy to extrapolate these to gauge statewide anti-incumbency. He argued that local elections are influenced by hyperlocal issues, ward-level candidate dynamics, and tactical voting arrangements between Congress and BJP aimed solely at defeating the Left. In state assembly elections, Vijayan asserted, the electorate evaluates overarching vision, leadership stability, and macro-level development, with the LDF's structural foundation at the grassroots remaining unshaken.

Stance on Communalism and Security Achievements

On the party's stance towards communal outfits like the SDPI, Vijayan clarified that the Left has zero tolerance for communalism of any shade. He views majority communalism as the primary threat to India's constitutional democracy, with minority communalism equally dangerous and acting as an enabler for majority communalism. Vijayan emphasized that the CPM has never compromised with these forces.

Regarding the home department's achievements over the past decade, Vijayan pointed to Kerala remaining an oasis of communal harmony and peace in a country fraught with polarisation. He also highlighted the modernisation of Kerala Police, earning national accolades for scientific crime investigation, women's safety, and maintaining the lowest corruption rates in the country. While acknowledging occasional violations of conduct within a large uniformed force, Vijayan stressed a zero-tolerance policy with swift action against offenders.

Defense of Project Initiation and Fiscal Management

Responding to opposition claims that the LDF government has not successfully initiated and completed major projects within its tenure, Vijayan countered that laying a foundation stone and abandoning a project is not an achievement. He cited examples such as the National Highway 66, where the LDF committed over Rs 5,500 crore for land acquisition after previous inaction, and the GAIL pipeline, which was completed under their tenure. Vijayan also noted that projects like Kochi Water Metro, Digital Science Park, and K-FON are entirely LDF initiatives.

On concerns about the state's fiscal situation and sustainability of welfare programmes, Vijayan attributed fiscal stress to an artificial crisis engineered by the Union government. He accused the Centre of unconstitutionally slashing borrowing limits, ending GST compensation, and weaponising the finance commission to cut revenue deficit grants. Despite this financial embargo, Vijayan stated that the state has not stopped any welfare measures, improving tax administration to increase state tax revenue by nearly 50%. He pledged to continue fighting Centre's discrimination while creatively mobilising resources to support the marginalised.
